I have a stuck EGR valve on my 98 Mazda 626 V-6. The repair manual I have does not do a very good job describing its location. Has anyone changed out their EGR valve? Where is it located, any tricks and good manual to purchase. Please drop me a line.

I don't know where it is on your vehicle, but on my 1988 B2200 I took it off, chiseled out the solidified carbon, soaked it in carb cleaner, got the valve operational, and re-installed it. Saved me $250. R&R was simple, two nuts. A Mazda mechanic on-line told me he never replaces them, just cleans them out.

EGR valves need to be replaced only when the vacuum diaphragm collapses and the valve no longer opens. Periodic cleaning of the valve stem assure that the valve will not get permanently stuck open, which will cuase a lot of exhaust to be dumped into intake manuifold and mess up the air fuel ratio, ausing bad performance.
