MX3 V6 - 'Mystery bump from rear of vehicle'

I have a 1996 registered Mazda MX3 V6. When I come to a halt - there is a mystery bump/thud from the rear of the vehicle that cannot be traced by my garage or others in the know. Nothing obvious on inspection. Any thoughts as to what it could be, or where to start?

Check for something moving around in the spare tire compartment or the two side ones.
