I have a 1995 Protege LX. For 2 weeks now my gas mileage has been horrible, the idle rough, the engine loud, and the check engine light has been on. I replaced the spark plugs and distributor cap. That lessened the roughness of the idle and the check engine light went off for over a week. Yesterday the check engine light came back on.
Some threads in this board describe similar problems and people suggest possible causes such as plugged EGR valve, carbon build up, and bad front air sensors.
If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

When was the last time you replaced the plug wires? These cars need new plug wires every 60K miles for optimum performance. The boots of the wires are exposed to high heat and will degrade in time. If the car is missing on light acceleration, the plug wires are probably bad.
As suggested above, you need to find out what the engine check light code is first and then go from there.
