Very Odd ProblemOctober 29 2004 at 12:15 AM No score for this post | Danny |
| Guys I have been having the wierdest problem with my 89 929 for a couple of months. Sometimes when I turn on my car the wheel gets extrememly hard, as in hard to turn in either direction at any speed, if the car is turned off and back on it usually goes away sometimes it does not. It is so hard and annoying that sometimes I pull over on the street and turn the car off and on until it gets smooth. What makes it more annoying is that the 929 has extremely smooth steering so thats what I am used to so when this happens I could barely turn the behemoth. I love this car, its great despite all the problems it could give so guys help me out, any info at all would be helpfull, thanks. |

The car has hydraulic steering, so
being low on power steering fluid, or a slipping pump drive belt due to improper tension are major causes of the symptoms you have.
There are a couple of other possibilities, but they require more in-depth troubleshooting. |

I believe too that there is an electronic control box which varies the pressure in the system, separate from the transmission control and engine control ECU's. |

The power steering is the first thing I checked when I felt the problem and it is perfect so that isn't the problem. The ECU I also doubt is the problem 'cause it would always stay hard if that was the case. Now for the drive belt it could be but what I really think it is is the steering rack & pinion unit which I had serviced a little while ago in which the mechanics had to take it out and put it back in to work on it and I'm almost positive that it started acting up shortly after. | |
