I have a mazda xedos 6 1995, it has been diagnosed by the dealers as misfiring on cylinder no 3. Idling is rough more noticably when engine is stalled. Engines not ticking over smoothly. Dealers not interested in delving any deeper. Does the engine need rebuilt?

A miss fire can be caused by many things. An easy way to tell if you engine needs to be rebuilt is to have a compression test done. Make sure you have all cylinders tested not just #3. If the compression test is good then you can move to the ignition system. If it's bad then you will need to look into the engine. The mechanic that tested for misfire should be able to do a compression test.
