i have a 1993 mazda mx-3, i cannot find the check fluid hole to place the gear oil in, there seems to be a bleed valve at the bottom of the transmission pan, does anyone know where to drain and refill the gear oil

All the manual transmissions I have ever serviced have the drain plug on the bottom and the fill/check plug about half-way up on one of the sides. Unscrew the fill plug, stick your finger in to check the oil level. If changing (most use 80-90 weight TRANSMISSION OIL, check the manual), drain out the old oil, replace plug, then pump the new oil into the fill hole slowly until it starts to overflow, then replace the fill plug. Not difficult, but a little awkward.

For 1993 Mazda MX-3 4 cylinder 1.6l engine, the manual trans fluid is added through the speedometer driven gear mounting hole. For the V6 1.8L engine, the manual trans filler plug is just above the drain plug about 1 inch to the right. For normal season, use 80W90 gear oil (either GL-4 or GL-5 is OK). For all seasion, use 75w90. In an extremly cold weather, you can use automatic transmission fluid Dexron.

I just changed the transmission oil on my old manual 323 the other day. I had to remove the speedo gear to add the oil. On mine the speedo cable enters the transmission at the top back of the transmission casing (pretty much above the drain screw) between the engine block and the back of the engine compartment. The speedo cable enters the transmission vertically and you can follow the cable into the back of the dash as you would expect. First off I had to unscrew a large nut so I could remove the cable and then a removing a smaller bolt allowed me to lift out the speedo-coupling gear from the transmission leaving a hole to add the oil. It was pretty fiddly and you have to reach right down. And you'll need a funnel with a long skinny hose on it to add the oil. Finally there's a little notch in the top of the speedo gear housing that you have to locate with a tab on the end of the cable when you reassemble.
