I have a 1993 mazda Protege DX 5 speed. When ever i come to an idol (it doesnt do it when its driving) it makes this squeaking sound. The sound is coming from the side of the engine that the transmission is connected to. It sounded like it was coming from the distributor, but then i pulled it out and turned it and its fine. Then i had a clue that it was the transmission, so i changed the gear lube and it still does it. Could it be somewhere between the engine and the transmission, like the clutch or the flywheel or something???? Help me out with this, this sound is driving me nuts!!

Pick up a piece of plastic tubing and use it like a stethescope to hunt for the noise. Belts or pulleys and the things they're associated with are the most common source of noises of this type, no matter what side of the engine they seem to be coming from.
