my 87 B2000 was parked for a long time. a mazda mechanic rebuilt the top end and it has an all new fuel system (hoses, sender, pump, wiring, etc.) it was running fine for him, then it started dying out of the blue on the road. he parked it. i bought it, drove it home, but it wouldn't stay idling. ran better after i revved it to like 2500 rpms. now it's in the garage and it has no spark. i have had it running a few times, but it idled at 3000 rpms when it did. any suggestions? please? my v8 chevy's killing me on gas mileage. i want my mazda!!!!

I recently had a problem with my 81 mazda not having spark and what ended up happening was the shear or roll pin that held the gear on the end of the distributor ended up breaking therefore not causing any spark because it would not turn. Just pull the cap off the distibutor and try turning the rotor and if it turns your gear pin has sheared. Hope this works for you. Rob

Ignition problems.

No this doesn't sound like a mechanical problem it definatly sounds electrical. Symptoms sound like the ignition coil might be shot and breaking down. Before buying anything I would take your distributor cap off and look at the inside of it and the rotor button. If the metal edges on the button look very black and rounded replace it, same goes with the cap if it seems to have black gouges in the terminals replace it as well. If you decide to replace the cap get one from NAPA, they are the only people who sells one with brass terminals which will last much longer then the cheapo aluminum ones everyone else sells. The NAPA part number for it is EP815. I would also visually inspect your plug wires for corrosion or white spots on the terminals and look for white or black burn through marks on the outside of the boots and wires. Check for loose electrical connections on the coil and other wires. If all of those look good or have been replaced then I would replace the ignition coil. If you know it hasn't had a tune up in a while I would just get a new rotor button, cap, wires and coil, it will most likely fix all your problems. (Note: I don't recommend anything made by accel. If you still have problems or ever have any questions just drop my forum a post.

Just in case if you need it here is the timing check page on my site:
