the problem is this. every so often, the engine starts to pull a bit. when i put the clutch in, the revs go up to about 2000 and sticks there. if i blip the accelerator they come back down to normal. sont think its a sticky cable or anything, because the revs go up beyond what they were at. any ideas?

Check out the sticking cable theory cable first, as it's the easiest thing to check. Depressing the clutch pedal takes the load off the engine and will result in an increase in RPM if the cable is sticking. Squirt everything with a non-residue leaving lubricant and see what happens.

where will it most likely be sticking? i presume it`ll be the engine side, not the pedal side.

If it's sticking it'll more than likely be on the engine side, but it could be on either. Disconnect the cable at the engine side and see if you can feel any binding when you operate the gas pedal by hand. Squirt some WD-40 into the cable sheath.
