| The car recently died on me while driving. I was at a stop, moved about 40 feet then the engine dies and locks up the wheel. I roll over to the curb and put the car in park. Next I tried to start the engine (thinking it was no big deal) all it does is make a whhhheeeeeeeee sound. Sounds like its coming from the starter. I tried several times nothing. So I called my mechanic to drive over and check it out. He does check it, and he thinks its the starter. I had the vehicle towed back to my house. I was talking to my neighbor, who at this time was with his mechanic in the front of his house, told me that he can take a look at it. His mechanic said that it might be the timing belt. I do not know who is right or wrong or whatever. All I know is that I have limited funds, and if someone can point me into the correct direction.
symptoms: turn ignition whhhhheeeeeeee sound coming from starter, no spark from coil, looks like either the water pump or alternater is moving. Everything in the car seems to be ok. Headlights turn on, in car lights turn on. Ignition key turns ok, the auto trans seems to shift ok.
Any suggestions? Thanks Fellas. |

There's a solenoid assembly mounted on the starter that cause its drive gear to engage the flywheel teeth and crank the engine when you turn the ignition switch to the start position. From your description, it sounds like you may have a defective solenoid, which means the starter will have to be removed from the car for testing.
But this wouldn't be related to why the engine killed. | |
