Mazda Tribute accelerator/throttle hypersensitivity

My 2001 V6 Tribute has very "touchy" throttle tip-in. It is difficult to launch without chirping the tires, even with very gentle foot pressure on the accelerator. The same "hypersensitive" throttle makes it difficult to cruise at steady speed - either the throttle "surges" with the slightest accelerator pedal pressure or "dies" (coasts) when backing off the pedal. Does anyone know of a fix (to smooth-out the throttle response) for this problem? thanks very much, Gary.
