can you tell me how much (min/max) can a third gen rx-7 with average mileage cost ? anyone willing to sell one in the Ohio area ?

anyone purchased a second hand third gen ? Would you really say it is a good decision to go for a used rx-7 ?

Hey,
My 3rd gen is second hand. Unfortunately I was too young to buy it brand new. So I had to settle for a used one.
One thing that you have to take into consideration is the model year. At first I wanted a 1993 seeing as they go for less cash.
Started to do my homework and found out that a 1994 would be a better solution because Mazda fixed alot of bugs from the 93 year.
I was fortunate to find a 3rd gen that was not driven very hard (only 50,000 km when I bought it) and the person that had it before me took very good care of it (serviced only at Mazda dealerships).
It's a 1994 with the popular package. All stock!
I emphasie STOCK. If you find a 7 that has been modified please move on. Alot of people tend to screw around with these cars when there is no real need to do that.
Go for a used 7 but make sure that you have all service records and that the car hasn't been tampered with or that its engine has been replaced.
When you get your 7 make sure you know of a dealership that knows a great deal about the car.
Many dealers don't and they may end up screwing up the car.

Good luck on the hunt!

Chris

Several people I have called had modified RX-7s. Would you say any kind of moddification is a big negative factor ?

On the other hand a guy wants to sell his 1994 RX-7 (unmodified) with 81000 miles for $18000 but thats a bit too much for me. How much would a 3rd gen 1994 RX7 with about 50000 miles on it cost nowadays ? How much did you pay for yours ? Would you buy that or a 1994 3rd gen (again unmodified) with 23900 miles for $21900 ?

Hey,
The prices vary according to how well the car has been taken care of. I paid a little over $30 (Canadian, I guess about 20 US).
I recommend you stay away from 3rd gens that have been modified. Stick with stock until your sure you know what you want.
I would stay away from the 81000 miles but go for the 50000 one. It all depends on which model it is (Touring, R1&2, stock etc.). You also have to make sure that the interior has been well kept. I've seen some 7's with awesome exteriors but their interiors were eaten up. I recommend Armor All for the interior.
If it were me I would go for the 23,900 (equivalent of 40-45000 km). You would still have the basic warranty and if your lucky the person before you has bought the extended warranty which would cover you well pass the 100000 mile mark.
Try to stay away from the ones that are 50,000 +.
From here on its your choice.

Later,
Chris

P.S. Do tell us which one you'll buy ;-)

Man, I went to see the 94 RX-7 with 81000 miles today and after a test drive, i am in love with the feeling. but the car smells like a real big cigar. the guy is a heavy smoker and all the dash and almost everything in the car is covered with gray smoke/ash. The car itself looks in perfect condition from outside, but the inside is just like an ashtray. the price/mileage ratio tells me to go for the other one as you have also suggested but to be honest i've only got $18800 Knowing that i can just buy the white rx-7 (the ashtray) and go, tempts me. 80000 miles on the other hand is a lot more than just 24000. i will go see the other one too. i will have to travel almost 100 miles but no problem. the real problem might be finding the extra $3000. (loan ?) but I'll tell you my final decision.

are you still having problems with your sunroof ? Or was it someone else who had rattles ?

Don't rush out and buy that ashtray. Have a little more patience, I know how the car can seduce you but you have to look at the big picture.
The car will come to you just be patient.
As for the sunroof, it's still giving that little rattle but I've think I've pin pointed it. Going to take advantage of the long weekend to see if I can fix it.
Tell us how it goes.

I finally saw the other RX-7 too, and that one definitely is in much better condition. Both interior and exterior. The owner (who was a very nice person and to whom I told about the other car) persuaded me that the 57100 miles difference was worth the extra $3000 and I persuaded him to gimme the car for 21000. So I am now trying hard to collect that 2200 as soon as possible. I have no more patience. I am dying to take that RX-7 home. Do you know how it feels ? I shall post a picture of it here as soon as I buy it. Thank you very much for all your advice and help.

PS. How was your weekend with the sunroof :)

I know what your going through. I couldn't wait to get my RX-7 too. I almost bought a black R1, driven in the snow, owner replaced engine under warranty, etc... I had good friends that kept me tied to a chair until my cravings went away :)
That sounds like a good deal though, this just might be the one. You've ever noticed that shopping for one of these cars is like finding that special girl :) That's all I'm missing now!
As for the roof, amazingly enough I've fixed it.
Doesn't rattle anymore. The only other rattle that needs to be taken care of is the one coming from behind the gauges. But that can be taken care of by the dealer seeing as how they made that rattle happen after they did a recall on the brake hoses or something like that. It's in the white pages of Mazda.
Looking forward to seeing that 7 of yours!

Finally I got it home.. Oh so wonderful a feeling that is. I cant really spend a minute at home. I want to go to my RX7. Will write about it later, and send a picture if I can get a friend to have it scanned.

Bye for now. I'll be back :))))
