My 1990 B2200 still runs well. I just installed a new head. Now when I start the engine hot or cold it will start fine and idle nice. After about 30 sec. it will start to burn oil like someone took the rings out. This lasts for a couple of minutes and goes away and every thing is fine.

Peculiar it would do this with a new head, though. Maybe valve guide seals were no put in right, or somehting else is the problem.

These engines are notorious for oil ring problems. Plan on re-ringing it to fix this problem.

The seals may be leaking oil. This is unusual in a properly rebuilt head, but stranger things have happened. I'm assuming it only does this when starting a cold engine. I would have the seals checked.

Valve stems

I don't know if this pertains to Mazda engines but check for valve stems in a book. My girlfriend's escort did that (untill it just stopped bothering to save oil and started burning it so bad you couln't see behind you). I was told by her mechanic that it was valve stems. I don't even know what they do or where they are.
good luck

I had the same thing happen in my 92 b2200. I freaked thinking something was really screwed up. I had just changed the oil too. Well after going over the engine a couple times i noticed that i was just a bit over the full mark on my oil stick DOH!! I never thought this small amount would make a difference but drained a little out and the smoke stopped.
I fill the oil 3/4's into the safe zone now have no probs.

you need rings in your truck. What happens in these engines is carbon builds up in the ring grooves and the rings stick in the piston not allowing them to seal properly. I am a Master Mazda Technician and I also own a B2200. You need an engine overhaul or replacement to correct this problem I promise you.

I bought a Mazda 2600I 4x4 used in 1997. About a week after driving to a from work, I started home one day and noticed a pinging sound and found out there was no oil in the motor. I got it diagnosed and found that the motors rings and all that crap was shot and would need to be rebuilt or junked. I was going to keep it because it was paid off so I decided to rebuild it. In 2000 spent $2300 on rebuilding the motor, top and bottom completely but... It still some how burns oil. I don't know what else to do with it.. It is in good running order and I have gone on alot of good 4x4ing trips with it but, I cant keep changing the oil on it forever. I have to keep an eye on the oil every week so that I dont run dry and destroy it for good. This really sucks if this is just a known problem with these trucks. I would of rather junked it when I blow the motor the first time and bought a Toyota Tundra or something. If anyone can suggest anything else that may fix this problems please email me.

1990 B2200
I spent about 3 years trying to figure this problem out. It was my oil ring on my number 4 piston. I took the pistons out myself and all the rings looked good, but I replaced them all and it has not burned any oil since. I used to have huge amounts of smoke pouring out after start up. I talked to a mechanic by my apartment and he told me he fixed a similar problem in a mazda truck, but he wasn't sure of the cause. He replaced the valves and piston rings, and that fixed the problem. I also met a couple other mazda owners with the same problem, so this seems to be a very common mazda thing. I don't check this board much so if anyone has any questions or anything, please feel free to email me.

I bought a 1992 B2200 LE 5 new. Had to have the engine rebuilt at 60 K because of the rings. It ran fine for 10k more and then same problems. I can't even hold the oil in it. I will never by a Mazda again!!!!

Damn isnt it obviuos to people by now? the valve stem seals in F2 motors suck, they do they may last 10k or 70k but they are gonna go, if your rings are blown you burn oil ALL THE TIME if your valve stem seals are gone your burn oil until the vavle naturally seals itself. Dont worry, and like the one post said, just live with it till you dont wanna put oil in it you dont even have to take the head off to do it, you just have to get the adapter to put an airline in your cyl.
I hope this helps anyone having this problem.

You can go to your local Library and get a really good version from a chiltons book or whatever they have, but even the haynes manual for the truck has how to do it in there, I dont know if they have the steps to do it when the head isnt off, but its super easy I mean you rip the the old ones off with pliers and gently tap the new ones on.

I didn't know that the valve seals could cause that sort of problem. I put aftermarket ones in mine when I rebuilt it and havn't had a problem. The rings are notorious to go, although mine had really torn up rings and cylinder walls when I rebuilt it and it smoked ONLY when I started it and when I reved it. So really it can be anything from the rings to the valvetrain.
