King headed back for the Far East 5 April 1965 escorting Oriskany (CVA-34). She operated from the South China Sea during May screening carriers and participating in air?sea rescue work. She continued to serve off Vietnam until returning to San Diego 2 November 1965.
A little more detail (than was asked for). KING departed SDiego 5 April 65 enr Pearl Harbor w/ORISKANY (CV34); in port PH 11-12 Apr; local ops w/CV 13-15 Apr for ORI; in port PH 16-19 Apr; enr Subic w/CV 20 Apr-3 May (with three Soviet BEAR overflights enroute); Subic 3 May; enroute and in Tonkin Gulf 4 May - 7 June, mostly serving as PIRAZ (then called TOMCAT) for Gulf CV ops; Subic 7 June for a week, during which I departed the ship. Events of interest during May Gulf ops were occasional false radar returns characteristic of atmospheric peculiarities in that area, and which were similar to the "PT boat" events experienced by MADDOX and TURNER JOY in "Tonkin Gulf incident". KING went to GQ on the first such occasion, but not again when the nature of the phenomonen was recognized.
I am trying to remember when the ship took provisions in da nang pier. I do not have access to the ship's log but I remember taking provisions on the pier.
I need somone that remembers and please e-mail me if you can, thank you.
I don't think we were in Da Nang during that period, we took most of our provisions from Subic Bay. I was in R-Div at the time and I have never been to Da Nang, Vung Tau yes
