They said "JOIN THE NAVY AND SEE THE WORLD"... I joined and the ONLY overseas I saw was CANADA!!!
I left the King about 2 weeks before it went to 'NAM...
It's been so long ago that I was there that I've forgotten everyone's name, Looking for a BM that took me to some of the Strip Clugs in his home town and King's Home Port, San Diego... We went to my folks place in Cerritos, CA for Christmas where he met my Father, Step Mother, Half brother, Aunt, and her 12 yr old daughter that seemed to take to him pretty well...
I was recently involved with a lady that was married to a fellow Kingsman: Roger D. Nelson FN, from EM Div. ... She still had his WesPac book from 1965... a pic of him, "Muggs" Gene, Carmaletu Dino, and a gal from Copacabano in Olongapo, Phillipines is also in there... If he see's this and would like the book and pic back just reply to this Post...
I would like to attend the reunion, but have serious doubts of being in New Oreleans at that time... Since I don't drink, just take a TOKE for me!!! lol
George Paul's Navy tour in a nutshell:
In AR at age 17, dropped out of Seniour year of High School 2 months before graduation because of trouble with step father shortly after mother dies and goes to CA to live with his Biological Father (that he hadn't seen from age 1 to age 16). LIve with Father, Step Mother, and half brother for about a year and a half, then had trouble with Step Mother and decided to join the Navy... Took the entrance tests in Los Angeles and find that I made the 2nd highest score in the whole city... Once again 2 months before graduation from HS nad to drop out to go back to AR.... Recruiter there fudged some papers to make it look like I had graduated from HS so I could be put in the NUCLEAR program (6 year hitch)... Went to Boot Camp in Orlando... when they said something about the FBI doing a SECURITY check, I confessed that I hadn't graduated, so they still gave me my "A" School, but now in regular Navy (4 year hitch)... Took my EM training in GREAT LAKES, IL... Then went to home port San Diego and the USS King, DLG 10...
