Hey there everyone. My name is Alexandra and I live in New Zealand.
I am doing a research assignment on my family history and I was wondering if anyone would like to help.

My Grandmother and Mother lived on Canvey Island from the 20's to the late 50's. thier names were Patricia (Pat) Bennett (grandmother) later Patricia Fox. She married Derek Fox, who sadly died in 1999. My grandmother lived with her grandmother Emily Strange. i'm not sure where abouts on the island.

Due to my Nanna having a stroke, she is unable to tell me a lot of what happened in her younger years, so hopefully someone will be able to tell me.
She worked in a Bakery, and later the Post Office.

My Grandfather Derek Fox was a builder.

any information anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

you can find some pictures of my family at
www.team187.web1000.com/CanveyFamily.htm

thankyou
Alexandra

Dear Alexandra,

Hello, my name is Arthur Parslow,

I think that the bakery where your Grandmother may have worked in was B.B Grout Ltd, 101 High Street, Canvey Island, Essex SS8 7RF, (Tel: +44 (0)1268 511245) as I am sure this was the only bakery on the Island at that time, I say this due to the fact that my father worked in this bakers. His name was Arthur Samuel Parslow (But was called Sam) he may have know more but unfortunately he passed away a few years ago.

Our family lived on the Island by the lake at Vadsoe road and I was a child during the floods, I was born on the Island (1949) and I remember we all sat on roof of the bungalow with the water up to the gutters of the house at night, eventually the Army came and took us off in a rowing boat, I remember that day well, as it was my sisters birthday party (1953) the cakes and jellies were all lost.

But we survived , we spent the following year in London, before returning to the Island, when we refurbished the bungalow.

Maybe since the B.B Grout which is still on the Island may have some records from back then, my be worth a look as I remember it was a family business.

I still have family on Canvey Island, a younger brother, an older sister, and others on the mainland in the County of Essex.

Lots of Luck,
Arthur Parslow

Hi Arthur
Nothing to do with the subject in hand but I just thought I'd mention that I worked with your dad on Canvey council in 1962-63.
I remember him well as a very nice chap.
I also remember your bungalow and some of your family.
Regards
Rob

Hi

Don't forget Steves the Bakers that was next door to Canvey-on-Sea Post office, both at Leigh Beck next to the Admiral Jelicoe. AFAIK Aubry Stevens founded the Canvey Heritage Centre and his son curerently works at Grouts.

Hope this is of some help.

Dave

Hi Alexandra

Could you please check your website address as I would love to see the photos of Pat. I did try to email you a photo of Nana Strange but I don't know if you received it.

As I mentioned before I lived next door to Nana Strange and Pat in Wamburg Road. The details given by someone about the name of the house are correct.
