PNG PM accused of lying over Moti
Tuesday Mar 6 13:25 AEDT
Papua New Guinea's sacked national security chief has accused Prime Minister Michael Somare of lying over the Julian Moti affair.
Somare last week squarely blamed former National Security Advisory Council director-general Joseph Assaigo for organising a PNG military flight from Port Moresby to the Solomon Islands for the wanted Australian lawyer.
The October 10 flight enabled Moti to evade extradition to Australia to face child sex charges.
Somare said Assaigo was a friend of Moti's and their families were connected through marriage.
But Assaigo has hit back at Somare, saying he had brought shame and indignity to his name by his allegations.
He told PNG's newspaper The National that his Fijian wife's family had no connection with Moti as Somare alleged.
Assaigo said the prime minister's allegation that he knew Moti personally was also false.
When he was PNG's high commissioner to the Solomons from 1994 to 1998, he at no time associated personally or professionally with Moti, he said.
"I did not know Mr Moti until he was arrested in Port Moresby.
"He was not even in Honiara when I was PNG's high commissioner there."
Assaigo also rejected Somare's allegation that he had political ambitions to topple the prime minister from the East Sepik regional seat in the mid-year national elections.
