Grrrrrrrrand Chief Speech (Sept 2003) Posted Jun 3, 2007 7:20 PM
The Grrrrrrand Chief's words:
"At this time, we must address the issue of governance. We must regain the respect of our people in their leadership and government. We must counter the negative portrayals of our country by the quality of our leadership and integrity of our government.
When the rule of law, procedure and system applies fairly everywhere, we should be able to see tangible outcomes in our quality of life. ….
Unlike any institution or governmental body our Ombudsman Commission, whilst performing its constitutional duties, is practically involved on a day to day basis in ensuring good governance.
I am proud that this important pillar of our Constitution is actively involved in ensuring that our government and its arms and agents are working towards achieving our national goals.
In establishing our Ombudsman Commission we deliberately ensured that its powers had extra-jurisdictional application. The Ombudsman Commission plays the role of a national guard against the enemy within and the enemy beyond.
The Constitution's inclusion of all ambassadors and senior diplomatic and consular officials under our Leadership Code is deliberate. It requires our leaders to disclose to the Ombudsman Commission their business connections with foreign corporations and foreign citizens. "
