Somare: Caution about PNG First Party Move

May 9 2004 at 1:35 AM

Te move by PNG First Party to join the government must be seriouly considered, before making any move to accommondate Sir Mekere and his opposition colleagues. The NA and the coalition partners should label this as a tactic for destablising the government. The split within Mekere and Wingti is a temporary move made to create venues to outcast the government.

Whether Mekere does join with Somare or not, the mere fact that there is this tendency makes Somare's position more stronger.

This move is a catalyst for any fence sitters in the govt ranks to really consolidate their position with Somare as their numbers now become somewhat "dispensible". He is now the man with the carrot.

However, as this unfolds, it is paramount that all MPs realise that it is all for stability. Lest we forget, instability has been one of our biggest national disasters since independence.
