Ona resurfaces
Reclusive leader wants Aust and PNG out of Bougainville

FRANCIS Ona, the reclusive leader of the Mekamui Movement, has come out of hiding for the first time since 1989 to demand that Australia and Papua New Guinea leave Bougainville.
Mr Ona has not ventured out of his Guava base in Panguna since the rebellion, which broke out in 1989 and ended after a number of peace agreements. The peace process culminated in the elections for the Bougainville Autonomous Government, due to take place in June.
Mr Ona has not actively taken part in any of the peace meetings, but many of his BRA members have since left him to become active participants in the peace process.
But Mr Ona and his Mekamui followers decided to make their presence felt yesterday.
They staged a peaceful protest march in Arawa to present a petition to the United Nations Observer Mission on Bougainville representative Tor Stenbeck, demanding that the UN recognises Bougainville as an “independent nation of Mekamui islands”.
The march began at one of Mekamui Movement’s member’s house at section 6 in Arawa, proceeded to the police station and then the Arawa main market, before ending at the UNOMB’s compound.
UNOMB representative Mr Stenbock received the petition from Mr Ona. In the 3-page petition, Mr Ona referred to himself as King Francis D. D. Domanaa, Head of State of Mekamui.
At the UNOMB compound, Mr Ona, clean-shaven and with a loud hailer in hand, demanded that the UN honour its own charters on self-determination and remove PNG or the Australian government from Bougainville.
Mr Ona said that Australia and PNG were welcome to remain on Bougainville provided they establish embassies, act responsibly with peaceful intents, and abide by Mekamui’s sovereign charters and laws.
The 3-page demand makes no direct threats or ultimatum against anyone.

Strongpela, I think you are a girlie,girlie. Whether you like it or not Mr Ona has a very strong and well equiped army and he is sitting on one of the biggest mines in the world. He can deliver economic recovery if he wants to by opening the mine. Momis is full of empty promises and has not delivered anything to Bouaginville for the last 34 years.
He has been preaching de-centralization of powers for that long that now he has forgotten what it all means. Mr Ona has provided him with the flat form. That is why he want to contest the autonomous govt election ( Bloody power hungry).
Mr Ona is still the most powerful man on Bougainville. He fought PNG and won. Just give him some time in the open and see he does next. The Kingship issue originated from that criminal (Noah Mungsinkung) who spent sometime at Panguna before he was chase to his place in Siwai. The media and local politicians are now using the monarchy issue to discredit Mr Ona. They better not push that campaign too far.

Ona has very limited supported. Most of his former allies from BRA like Kabui and co have turned against him. His no-go zone is shrinking every day. He is longlong. Why would Bougainville want to have him as a king?

Francis Ona is no real obstacle on the development on Bougainville. The real obstacles are those who are standing for the elections on Bougainville. Kabui, Momis, Leo Hannett, and the list goes on. They are all ex priest. Practically they have no new ideas or feasible developments to deliver. There have proven this over the 30 years. Their only strength is creating new types of governments on Bougainville, Provincial, Translation, Interim, Autonomous.etc and absorbing the minds of naive population.
They are now creating a big white elephant (autonomous government) which is going to suck up the money that should be used to build the roads. school, clinics. The poor people are thinking that this new government is going to bring prosperity on the island but its not. Its going to be are very expensive goverment to run. Where are the many educated professional Bougainvilleans passed through the two universities and have many years of experience in the REAL world. Why don't you challenge these old bombs.

Ona has not lost his mind..you are mistaken, he has the support of majority of Bougainvilleans. He has partially achieved what he has been fighting for..The war is not over yet, though.
Infact he is the driving force behind everything that has transpired till now. His refusal to participate in any negotiations has been a bit frustrating for some..but he has stood by his principles. He is a man of principles as such..the kingship issue is a influence of none other then Criminal Con-Artist Noah Musingkan.

For some of us who had our belly button burried in NSP ...i personally think without Mr Ona ...Pogera, Ok-Tedi, Lihir etc.. LOs...wouldnt get what they have from their payout royalties instead of a lousy K50.00 rolayties given to bouganvillians ....

Mate, We will definetly prove to you that it will work. Can't you remember that North Solomon Provincial Govvernment was very sucessful because it was not something which was got on a golden plate. Bougainvilleans also fought for it during the 60s if you do not know anything about our history.
And comes the autonomy which is also achieved through the spill of blood, I'll assure you that it will work to pay the price those who died. And mate if you are one of those who is crying for autonomy just for the sake of getting it, you will definetly find it dificult to run it because there is no aim for getting it.
As for Bougainvilleans, it is a vision which pre-dates to some decades ago. This means that we are ready for it and what we had been fighting for is now bearing fruit.

Bougainville has not gained the Autonomous Government status on a golden plate. Sheer struggle, sacrifice, suffering, pain, tears and loss of lives has brought us this far. For other provinces who are expressing similiar sentiments I do hope it is not given to them on a golden plate.
Bougainville will prove it once again,,that it can do it as ARB. History will repeat itself again,,and yes there is no turning back. Mind you, Bougainville has set the pace in almost everything that other provinces are benefitting from.
Yes, Bougainville will rise again from the dust as the Nasioi's refer to it. "Sipungeta" rise up from virtually nothing,, that is the current state in terms of economy, infrastructure and all which was lost during the war.
For Francis Ona, yes he is a rebel, call him whatever name, but he is not out of his mind. He has set the pace and he has the respect of all Bougainvilleans.

Many people have different perceptions about Ona and all what is happening in Bougainville. The struggle, Autonomy..etc..Some think Ona is out of his mind. He is not..for your information. What's happening is part of the long struggle for the independence of Bougainville. Nobody none other than those who really involved with the struggle(Bougainvilleans) will really understand what is really happening in Bougainville. SAPOS YOU NOGAT SAVE LONG PAIT LONG BOUGAINVILLE...just relax yourself. Don't get yourself involved in what you don't know....simply because you will never understand. Resources owners(Landowners) in PNG should be happy too that because of what happened in Bougainville, they are getting at least better(still not the best) benefits from the development of the resources in thier home provinces.
Anyway, I still think many people think the Autonomy will fail, even the Nat. Govt will try its best to make it fail.( For reasons that I won't tell) But we will prove everybody wrong. After we establish our Autonomous Government..we will be moving on forward with our heads on high...we will be marching for independence...you will see. The issue went from a simple compensation matter to a war and now that it's back to almost peace time, obviously at the deteriment of everyone, Ona's still living in the dark crevices of his idiotic & lunatic mind. For information, the revolution which happened in Bougainville is not of that compensation. This things a just part and parcel of the long struggle for independence which is rooted in 50s. If you know the history of Bougainville, the thought of independence already existed long before PNG got independence and even since some parts of PNG was not yet discovered by white man.

I really don't know whether you understand the complexity of the Bougainville Issue. If you don't know i suggest you shut up. Ona has lived his time he did achieve what the politicians of Bougainville could not. Of course I dont like theives, but some times you admire their zeal and sleekness, even in periods of chaos and anarchy they see opportunities and thats when their entrepreneurial ability surfaces (for all the wrong reasons of course),they are cunning and aggressive like all natural business man should be, they prey on their opponents and victims alike without mercy, and when they are less aware.

You talk about weighing the costs, education for children, and so on..how can you address these issue when the house is not inorder. You can not scratch the top and try to pretend to provide a band aid approach. These are short term issues that can be addressed only when the political issue is resolved. It is rather absurd to apply a band aid solution you are crying over.
USA, AUSTRALIA, NZ and PNG, are entitled to their opinions. They aren't going to decide Bougainville's destiny, why are you so worried about them, you can jump in the lake with them should you wish to.
And mind you don't link Musingku with the Bougainville issue. Because most Bougainvilleans don't support what he is doing, and is not in anyway linked to the Bougainville struggle. He is a dreamer whose days are numbered.
Nobody disputes the fact that Kaona, Ona and Kabui are fading lights as you say, but it will not stop Bougainvilleans. I salute them, they have done their part. For the younger generations the battle must go on. We will continue, the generations have not been wiped out by the crisis.

Maybe 9-11 happened "yesterday", its causes are way back to Middle East's history (Palestine, Israel, e.t.c). And you can not brush aside its widespread effects. There a fair interest in Pacific's matters & isuses now. Australia is now building its relationships with Indonesia and ensuring Solomons Islands gets back to normalcy. I had a friend in SI who thinks RAMSI must not go for the same like of lunatics that existed there like in Bougainville. And if you take the ECP into perspective you will see, its wider implications on your independence dreams. Practically it will never eventuate, not in the short to medium term. NZ is also paying more attention to issues and overarching that is US.
I see that you need some schooling in political and military strategies. And you could do with some psychic lessons I suppose? I think you lack a modern brain and you watched the Afganistan & Irag war not learing enough about military strategy and benefits of propaganda. And I would recommend you take some lessons in classical history and learn from success and failures of people like Napoleon and you could use some charismatic lessons from the Great Dalai Lama or the late Pope John Paul. You can never win a battle by using ignorance, lies stupidities & folly. Every human being including Bougainvilleans will only win, not war, not selfish so called demarcations we called "countries", but an integrated human spirit and all goodness that comes with it. These Bougainvilleans know what they want..They were denied benefits because the govt stole from that province and built others (or corrupted others). They believe they will do better without anymore png politicians infulence. They really know they will. I am from the highlands but have lived with good brothers from Bougainville or the 'Kawas' when I went to school and now I still have some good buddies. I have seen that they are a unique people. Once they have set their minds to achieve something, they dont stop unless they have achieved it or run out of gas so to say.
As a Papua New Guinean, I am really jealous about that island and her people because, I regret PNG not going thru that stage (struggle). We dont appreciate the freedom of independence that we have because it was given on a golden plate. PNG doesnt have a purpose, aim, goal, the list goes on...just because we take things for granted.
As for the Bougainvillians, I congradulate you on a big achievement. Though it came at a cost, I know you or your generations to come will never regret it. You have made it. The struggle has well defined your course, purpose, aims and goals and if history is something to go by you will be a great great nation in the region. Congradulations once more.

Scribe tells of daring trip to Guava
IT still feels like a fairy tale to me. I still have to get it into my brains that I actually visited Guava, especially the place of reclusive Me’ekamui leader Francis Ona.
A day before I took to the mountains of Guava, I headed home to my village to wave goodbye to my mother and see my little sisters for comfort.
On Wednesday morning, my friends Steve and Tsimes made sure I was safe in a PMV vehicle to Arawa and after 1pm, I was on my way.
I told them if I don’t return by Thursday to send a search party on Friday.
I slept my way to Arawa to brush aside the thought of how I would approach Mr Ona in his territory.
Bouncy George Corbett, Post-Courier’s former photographer who arrived from wherever he came from, kept me company all along. He kept reminding me to eat the lamingtons he bought for me.
Poor guy saw I was confused and not in my usual cheery mood.
Yes, I was happy to see Mr Corbett after five years of working together in Port Moresby but I was more interested and worked up with my trip to Panguna.
We arrived in Arawa a little after 5pm and 30 minutes after my arrival. I took to the streets to start negotiating for my trip.
I went and saw a couple from Siredonsi and got advice about the trip. It was Section 6, the Arawa office of the Me’ekamui that I was supposed to visit.
Geraldine, a friend was with me all night to listen to my plans. By five in the morning on Wednesday, we were up and by six o’clock we were already at the Me’ekamui office.
Geraldine waited with me for more than 45 minutes while the executive met with other people. Eventually, it was my turn to go into the office.
Chris Uma, the man who looks after the Me’ekamui office, and the one that I fear most, sat waiting for me.
As soon as I entered and took a seat, I shyly said I’m Gorethy from . . . he cut me off and tossed me the note with rules that I had to follow and said all I had to do now was find a car.
The rules spelt out what I was and not supposed to do.
One comforting thing I saw on the note was “be very friendly to her and don’t make her scared. Show her all the spots up”.
I was introduced to office secretary Kevin Buruau who was sent from Guava to accompany me. The next task was looking for a hire car.
I suggested cars that I knew, even brought four of them in, one by one, only to be told: “Sorry, they are not allowed up there.”
I was embarrassed — it felt like I was modelling cars. Eventually, I was directed to the only vehicle that had a green light for the area — owned by Luami and well known to Mr Ona and the Me’ekamui government.
At exactly 1pm, my trip to Guava began. Me’ekamui security Kevin, the driver Luami and I took off. We had no problems with the Morgan Junction roadblock. This time, the sight of guns at the roadblock did not matter to me, I was rehearsing my introductory speech to Mr Ona all through the trip.
I almost forgot the driver existed and almost missed the mine picture.
At 2.30pm, we arrived at the second checkpoint. The two hour drive up was very emotional as we stopped at the mine pit to take pictures. All the broken building, burnt vehicles, the thought of the beautiful serenity of Panguna before the crisis came back. I thought of several families and imagined their lives now — but I was prepared to see Mr Ona.
My heart started pumping as we neared his territory.
We were cleared by the guard who was aware of my visit and we drove down the Guava valley. We made another stop just before entering the second street (there are three streets in little Guava town) and another clearance was made. We parked in front of the Me’ekamui central bank building. As I was picking my bag, I heard a voice, “welcome home” — that was Mr Ona. My heart missed a beat and I was so scared I almost spoke my language to Mr Ona.
“Pleased to meet you,” Mr Ona put out his hand to greet me. “Pleased to meet you too” I quickly put out mine to shake hands. “Welcome and thank you for coming,” he said.
“And thank you very, very much for allowing me after five years of trying to interview you,” I told him.
He was very cheerful, a big smile on his face as he led me to his office. Oh my gosh . . . is what I said as soon as we climbed up the stairs to his office, which is in the central bank building. I shook my head in awe as we waited for the combination numbers to be keyed to the doors — Mr Ona has an electronically run office — you can even use remote controls.
A very well established office, with a few (maybe four) satellite phones, a mobile phone, computers and a brick wall room.
What I saw with my eyes in a nutshell was King Solomon’s mine, a country on its own, little America or what. Our interview went for an hour before the tour around Guava village. It took me an hour to talk to Mr Ona like I’d known him for ages.
The place was an amazing site and sight. A movie theatre with an amazing screen, 24-hour electricity from hydro, battery and generator, shops, a vanilla farm, poultry, guards and youths smiling and buildings made of brick with doors manufactured from Australia.
His wife Elizabeth cooked us dinner and I learned Mr Ona had not tasted or eaten rice since the Bougainville crisis.
My eyes are still wide open and I’m still thrilled by what I saw, some things are a well kept secret, not so much what I heard, a lifetime experience.
