PRIME Minister Sir Michael Somare has called on the people to embrace the positive developments gained since independence 31 years ago.
In his independence message to the people of Papua New Guinea, Sir Michael also indicated that this may be his last message as Prime Minister.
Sir Michael is in Cuba for the Non-Aligned Movement meeting and will head to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
“Let me inform you on this occasion how proud I am to have led the people of this great and diverse nation towards independence.”
He said he had travelled the nation over the last four years and was humbled by the goodness, sincerity and the feeling of oneness among all Papua New Guineans.
“Yes, there have been mistakes made that had impeded the pace of our development and it will take a few more years of hard work, sacrifices, good fortunes and, indeed, good governments to accelerate the process of growth and development.
“But I can assure you, people of Papua New Guinea, that we can do it. We can make it happen for our people and on our terms.
“Our lawyers are practising in Australia; our doctors are serving in the United States; our pilots are flying in the Middle East; our teachers are teaching in Japan; and all are constantly interested in our progress back home.”
Sir Michael said there would always be challenges and opportunities and many of the challenges faced have been related to the numerous times that governments have changed since nationhood.
