With the increase in pick-pocketing, forceful land & house acquisition in and around the Mt. Hagen city area by the Jigas and Mugeis, we desperately need a State Of Emergency. Authorities including the Provincial & National Government should declare a SOE immediately!!!
I am sorry to say this but Mt Hagen, the so called 3rd city is really unsafe for ordinary people to go about their business today. It is really unsafe, because there are groups of people going arround, not pick pocketing like they use to, but really holding up people in broad daylight with a knife or screwdriver to your belly. You will sadly watch when this people will easily work you over and you might barely escape with your very life!
Many people have died on the streets of Mt HAgen and pickpoketiing and gang attacks are all too common. People especially from SHP, Enga and Simbu and waghi are targeted, but even westernhighlanders themselves are not safe from these groups. I think its the Jigas and Moges group and other fringe youths doing this.
Mt HAgen City authorities really need to do something!!
City leaders and national leaders as well know this problem of pick pocketers exist but are turning a blind eye. They pretend Hagen is trouble free. How do they expect the 'city' from developing and going forward? Sadly this is a contributing the 'one step forward and not two but three steps back' syndrome. People have lost lives and leaders must act now or Hagen will no longer be the town we all once aspire to visit. Mind you the ever popular annual Mt Hagen Show is no longer the attractive show we all want to see. Why? ... You have it
I leave in Hagen but now I am a voluntary prisoner in my own house 'cause of this behavior. I only go out when there is a need, else I stay indoors. I have been a victim already, not once but few times and I do sometimes fear for my life.
1. Leaders need to speak out about these and have thugs change their mentality that 'nothing is free'. People work hard to have what they have and nobody has the right to front up forcefully and claim what is not theirs,
And that life is precious, and that we need to respect each other.
2. Leaders must call on ALL employers to start providing accommodation so they can identify who is lazing about leaving is squatter settlements and start evicting them. This should be done nation wide.
3. Thirdly, we are all in this mess cause of the actions of the Government. The devaluation of the Kina and eventual floating is takings its toll. The Government must act now to re-instate the Kina’s original status. I for one think, there should not be any debate. People are crying out for the government to act now. If this is done, Crime will reduce, housing costs will reduce, people can afford to buy decent and quality clothing (low quality Asian brands and used clothing’s are filling the shop spaces.
And I think we will see pick pocketers returning to normal lives, less armed hold-up, less robberies and we can go about freely in Hagen and for that matter anywhere in PNG once again.
As a fellow from Hagen myself, I sometimes feel very unsafe to walk the streets of Hagen town during the day. I even feel very reluctant to call myself a proud hagener anymore. Hagen was once home of business minded men and women and attracted alot of admiration from people in other provinces but that value is now fast diminishing. It come to stage were everybody including the so call leaders, policemen and women and loyal public servants are feeling insecure and the reaction to insecurity is to protect themselves first instead of serving others. No father or mother will serve others when their own spouses and chilren are at risk daily for as long as they reside and work in mt hagen. This effectively encourages people with bad motives to do bad thing at will. The honourable governor who commands huge support in the province has either fail to realised whats happening or is ignorant and probably does'nt have the capacity to deal with this problems, worse still he does not reside in Hagen, including the deputy governor who tries his best to rule but accutely limited in his skills and qualities as a transparent leader.
I know genuine elites from hagen would'nt want this to continue and its time now to act and make awareness to the national government to address this issues.
Somewhere down the line we as a people are doing something wrong to other fellow PNG born people. The reasons these youths are acting out our because they have way to much free time on there hand that is the first thing. The second thing is some how they are not qualified to be part of the major work force. Fail to reach them in ways to get them prepared for the modern ways of living, when these squanters move in from the rural areas. Is there away our government can keep its currency value and give jobs to these troubled youths. I think there is and I government needs to realise PNG has a problem and that problem is that we are to busy worrying about fatting our politicans bank accounts. Then creating more oppurtinities for our very on people, can we all agree on this as the first step towards redempition?
Adding on to what OUR friend has said is.. NO jobs... because Schools are popping up everywhere & grade 12 education level is in more schools than in the past. Also private training courses taught in most major centers each year, Universuties are also being added but where is the Job???
Where is the Job? For christ sake creat jobs first.
Job creation is very low or is lagging and education is moving is at a very fast pace. If this is addressed one problem will definitely be solved. Anywhere, that is what I believe.
One major problem is, we PNGeans are lazy... We only work when our last planting is running out from our gardens. After we have planted a new garden, we sit back relax and wait for the harvest time to come. This mentality must be changed.
For the pick pocketers, of course there is land to go back and toil to fend for them-selves but they choose to harass someone and steal. They must be dealt with by authorities but this is lagging. The town/city leaders must and need to pull their acts together now before it is late.
Yes.. A State of Emergency must be declared in Hagen. We need Police to roam the streets & and stationed at bus stop fulltime to protect the inocent people.
All the pickpot and thief are all the idiots of Jika and Moges that live aroud the town...they are the ones that are supposed to be blamed for all the petty crimes in hagen...the rest of the general Hageners are all hard-working and peace loving people.....Yupla ol Moge na Jikz wokim na sampela mipela kisim name nogut nathing tru...

So haven't we got any leaders at community, provincial and national level from Mt.Hagen and WHP who might address the issues and get a SOE.
Nobody else is going to do it and we can complain as much as we want but if our leaders do not say anything or do anything about it, then Mt.Hagen will go to the dogs.
Most of the regional offices have been relocated to Goroka. Fresh Food Develoment Corporation shifted to Goroka, followed by the regional Forestry Office. Just recently, the Lands and Physical Planning Regional Office relocated to Goroka. Most of the Specialist doctors positions at Mt. Hagen Regional Hospital are vacant becase Specialist Doctors do not want to go to Mt.Hagen. Doctors and officers employed in regional offices would rather work and live in Goroka because it is much more safer and there is housing available. It is also much more secure for their families because there are no threats from surrounding villagers who move into houses and occupy them at will like those from Mt.Hagen.
If things do not change, Mt. Hagen will become a Ghost Town whilst everyone goes to Goroka for key services.
Hagen is the cheapest place to live, not like Lae or POM. You can can survive with K 2.00 for a week as foods are affordable. But, pick-pockets by other provinces living in settlements and worse one from Hagener themselves.
HABEN WILL STILL REMAIN THE CITY OF WEALTH.. LOTS OF PPL IMMIGRATING TO HAGEN, JUST LIKE MOST BIG CITIES U R GOING TO FIND CRIME , JUST NEED A BETTER JUSTICE SYSTEM AND LOTS OF PROMOTERS TO CLEAN UP THE CITY..tourism is on the rise.
MY IDEAL town.. Hagen ur the Best .. lots of shopping centres, lots of unique villages. unique ppl. THE HAGEN SHOW>> so much to see and do. PRomte the city OF HAGEN> has so much potential..the golf club, social clubs , crafts, Market is awesome.. local crafts. fresh fruits and vegetables.
Baiyer Zoo..etc.. so much stuff. how can u deny such a place when all u have to do is promote and sort out the bad.
I work with a mining company and over my last break i was confronted by a group of boys in Hagen town. I was really scared of risking my life of carrying money in pocket.
I came back to work and informed my work mates not to go and spend money to buy goods at Mt. Hagen. I told them, if you ignore my message, you will either loss your life or money.
There are good towns like Goroka.
I think Goroka is the best place to spend, over my next break i promise to go to goroka.
Chast, all the goodies about hagen does not compare with our safety. How can you promote the good things in Mt Hagen when our very safety to enjoy those things are threatened? for example, I use to visit the main market for fruits when I went to town. Now I dont becasue its not possible. you know what I mean!
I am non Melpa and lived here in this City. the Scenery is breath-taking, The weather is second best to none. The market and the variety of vegies is awesome. you will have to live in this city to expereince the pros and cons of this place. The pick-pocket issue is everyone's business. You have pick-pockets in POM, Lae, Goroka and even in Sydney, Brisbane, New York. You also have big boys pick-pocketing Millions under the name of Missappropriation. Hagen is somewhat different, because the locals themselves are proud and arrogant and its people tend to defend their tribesman, clansman and wantokples, Melpa. Because of that attitude of arrogancy. immigrants from other provinces just go with the flow. Not all Hagens (Moge's and Jiga's) are bad people and not all thier young ones are pick-pocketers, but if you create the venue for pickpocket to flourish, than settlers join in and so the pick-pocket issue is not Hageners, doing it, its a mixture all the lost tribes who migrant from Simbu, Enga, Souths, and PNG who contirbute effective to the business of Pick-pocket, holdups, rascal acitivities. I think, its the attitude of the local Jiga's and MOge's and Yamka's and all those Melpa Speaking group of People can stand up and influence your peers to put a stop to it. As long as this attitude of arrogancy is prevalent amongst your tirbesman, you will have a long way to go in clearing your name as the worst city to live in PNG. By the way, I have found descent Jiga's and MOge's and Melpa people....not all that bad.
Hagen competing with Lae, SHP...worst provinces in PNG

Come down to earth brother...
We are talking about everday real life situation that is threatening the safety of the public...
I've always wanted to visit Mt. Hagen as I heard its one of the best highlands provinces in PNG. But after learning of all those that are happening, I guess I wouldn't consider ever going to Mt. Hagen.
Sori tumas...no leadership, no civil society control, and crime is proliferating..
Leadership problem is everywhere. Hagen is one such place too, but look at Waigani all the way to the backpage of this country. Leadership, it partly contributes, but it goes back to individual attitudes. Take for instance, Goroka town is one place where you will fear no pickpocket or hold-ups during the day. What makes that place different? Is it the leadership of that province? I rarely think so. Is it the Police force? I don't even consider that. Could we blame the leadership in Hagen for all this mess? I do not think that is the answer to it.
No matter what the situation is like in Hagen I still love and treasure my homeland but people really need to change for the better or we'll end up nowhere. It starts with individuals and then the province as a whole.......
KND...I think you are right. Individual attitudes that prompt those changes. If you can't train up a child in the way he should walk. You might not see immediate results but maybe ten years later, it will be....Just remember we came out of the stoneage and trying to adopt Western Civilisation all in once scoop, has its pros and cons.
