Is Kidu kidding? A character reference for the convicted public money stealer, Moi Avei? Read-that's what she did before the leadership tribunal.

Will she soon also give a character reference for her challenger, Justin 'mi laikim ol mangi' Tkatchenko?

Avei penalty decision on May 11

SUSPENDED Kairuku-Hiri MP Sir Moi Avei’s fate will be decided by a leadership tribunal on May 11 when it delivers its decision on penalty against the leader.
His lawyer Greg Sheppard and prosecutor Anthony Kupmain appeared before tribunal chairman Justice Timothy Hinchliffe and senior magistrate members Mark Pupaka and Steven Abisai yesterday to make submissions on what penalty the tribunal should recommend for the leader who has been found guilty of misconduct in office.

Another witness, Moresby South MP Dame Carol Kidu, was also called before the tribunal and read out a character reference on Sir Moi saying he had contributed a lot to the country.

Meanwhile, prosecutor Mr Kupmain submitted there was serious culpability on the leader’s part to warrant dismissal from office and the tribunal should therefore recommend the leader be dismissed from office.

He said Sir Moi had failed to live up to the standard required of him as a leader.

Mr Sheppard submitted, however, the tribunal should consider penalties other than dismissal from office as there was no serious culpability on the part of the leader.

Sir Moi was found guilty of five misconduct in office allegations on April 4.

The tribunal found the leader:

* FAILED to ensure that K250,000 in public money allocated for his electorate in 2002 for rural infrastructure projects was properly applied;

* FAILED to properly acquit those monies;

* HAVING entered into a tenancy agreement with the National Housing Corporation in 1995 over a rental property (Section 51 Allotment 128, Konedobu), failed to pay the rentals when they fell due; and

* KNOWINGLY, recklessly or negligently omitted to disclose to the Ombudsman Commission substantial information in relation to his rental liabilities in his annual statements for six consecutive reporting periods being for 1995/96, 1996/97, 1997/98, 1998/99, 1999/2000, and 2000/2001.

Wonders never cease do they. They're all in the same basket together when push comes to shove. Protecting each other.
