Thank you very much for posting the names of the candidates for Goroka.Am also from Goroka currently overseas.
My concern and many would agree with me is that for the first time Goroka has produce a leader in the likes of Mr Kimisopa in which he has gain overwelming support from through out PNG, and more to that he has been figuered the first MP in the highlands region qualified for PM post compared to other popular highlands MPs.Dr Unage a political science lecturer and few other establised reaseach organisations have prove that..Sadly the man who played a pro-active role in the Somare Govnt and was respected highly among equals is now up against another NA candidate in Goroka, and of coures 40 locals also contesting for the seat.Categorically,NA is desperate of number to rule once more, has no respect for very good PNGan politicians who knows politics and not only that it clealy demonstrate an indication that NA is not forming the next Govnt.therefore eitherway,NA wants to get rid of him at national politics and also the locals are not satisfied as 40 are contesting aginst Mr Kimisopa. There are instance were Mr Kmisopa could loose his intergrity quickly and that is on party politics. As a party leader he has to be very carefull on who to work alone with and who is contesting under the party banner.
Finally, we are not allowing policies, inquiry, and rule of law to rule but allowing gut feelings to rule.
I don't know what it means to you but being a Party Leader in the case of MP Kimisopa is very important, it will play a major role in the formation of new govt, lobbying for key portfolios etc and that will reflect on the kind of leadership quality Eastern Highlanders can produce. I think Bire as a United Party leader has shown that E. Highlanders are not that bad, for far too long our MPs have been slumbering in Waigani doing their own things and not impacting on the national scene. Anyway other intending candidates have potentials to be elected for Goroka too. Only the voters have the mandate, so we just have to wait and see the result come July.
All those jobs you're talking about within political parties ultimately boil down to who stole the most money beforehand and has the most briefcase carriers to dish it out before parliament formally meets to elect da PM.
What you highlighted is the general rule of thumb in PNG politics. Political Parties (and political party leaders) will have more support and following if they can dish out enough cash to keep everybody happy. Therefore to keep everybody happy, they have to steal more money from ... you know where...
It therefore makes no difference if Bire is Party leader or not... the bottomline is he is facing the challenge to retain his seat and the possibility of him going back depends on what has been cultivated in the Highlands politics and depends on how much cash he can distribute.
Gorokans, just be warned that if you don't vote in and retain current MP B.Kimisopa, you will be losing a potential PM candidate. He has performed exceptionally well at National level, just give him one more chance. I heard feedbacks from home that Bire will be challenged closely by M.Ijape (former MP) and someone by the name of Moses (2 Moses so i don't know which but they say he is from Kabiufa area). Lets see how the results turn out. PNG will be monitoring and following closely the counting of Gka Open because of Bire's reputation at the National Level.
