Hay shallow minded man Human resource development is a critical matter, well if you talk about copulating and producing I think you could be right only on one aspect of the whole situation. It is not about a cargo cult it is about education reform the access to better education facilities like a world standard education and the provision of better education to the rural parts of the country.
If you are a critical thinker you will realize that a real educated human resources can sustain an economy even after all its natural resources are being exploited and thats what I was referring to and if you got me wrong than i am sorry.
Yeah of course you are right in the most basic sense-human resource development is important.
Only problem is that right here and now, most countries, even developing ones, have far better education systems than we do. It's not enough to have an educated population - you have to OUTCOMPETE to win against competitors. We may all be able to read and write and do maths but if Chinese can do the maths faster, Australians read more books and thus know more than we do, and Japanese spread information in their own language more widely than we can spread information, then they outcompete us no matter what.
We won't be competitive in 1,000 years the rate we're going. We've been going backwards in education for at least 15 years, maybe 20.
Yes, yes, it's wonderful to point out the scattered PNGeans here and there who are world class and highly competitive but a few scattered success stories in a big ocean means nothing to a nation's development. It's like a few drops in a bucket, you can't even see thei effects.
Bottom line-we're screwed at the rate we're going. Just saying "develop the human resource" is very superficial because the truth of the matter lies in the details, not in broad sweeping general statements!
this site is full of critisicm of the govt. the people voted it in in democratic fashion and we should stop crying over spilt milk and start thinking of ways we can help ourselves.
that bitch of a man, somare, will be in power for another four years and if you live in reality, there is absolutely nothing we can do about it.
we have forests full of timber we can cut and export privately.
we are surrounded by a body of water we can fish.
png is rich of resources and we can utilise this privately.
it would even be better if someone stood up and started organising the people to start projects to that can allow them to help themselves and you dont need money to do many of them if you think about it.
" think not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country for that is how you will help yourself, your family and your poeple."
That's what I've being wishing the people would do. Don't wait for the govt. or politicians to do it for you. You do it for your own kind. Here's some suggestions we can offer the people.
1. Educate the people and I don't mean sending them to school, rather holding meetings or forums or community discussions where by people are told or explained to, the processes of how they can export their commodities like coffee/copra/cocoa, etc to interested investors whether they be PNG govt or overseas investors.
I believe as subsistence farmers, you don't pay tax on your produce, but then if you commercialise your farming, you are still better off instead of letting the Govt setting the trading rules.
2. Educate the people on how to invest or buy shares in the mining/oil/gas harvesting projects. Take ownership of the projects by being active and living of the profits of your investments. Don't touch or live off the royalties but bank it in a way that you only eat off the interests you earn.
3. Start up small businesses and be smart about how much you spend and how much you save. remember revenue - expenses hopefully you will be left with profit.
Bottom line is educate, educate, educate people how to be self-reliant. It is going to be VERY LONG WAIT before PNG sees any good governance unless the current Govt is overthrown somehow.
Until and unless we take a much more active role pressuring and reforming our leaders, PNG not only will not become better in the future, but will become worse.
The more people like you pray for change but take no active role in the process, the more likely PNG will continue to descend into its own, self-made hell on earth.
There are plenty of other countries that have already gone down the path that our country is falling into. Look at them, study them well if you want to see our sad fate. It's all because we're too lazy to do anything about it (a behaviour unlike the people of countries that have recovered and pushed forward).
We all have some good point, but some of our points are incomplete. It is a two way relationship; you need the government and the government needs you inorder for PNG to change. You cannot become ignorant about the government and think you will change this nation by your own hardwork. Keep on working hard, but we need back up from the government. On the other hand do not wait for the government to do anything for you if you are not working or are not prepared to work. Who is the government then? Government is the people and is supposed to be for the people. I find it hard to believe when some of you are talking here like you want to change PNG with your own efforet when you have elected the 109 members to govern you. These politicians then become rick quickly at our ignorance and at our resources becuase they have the power and access to larger amount of money to make easier for you. So please if you think you can change PNG without the governments suppor, you are right at a small proportion, but otherwise the goverfnment should at all times working for the people and not for themselves. It will take a millions years for you to change PNG is you want to let the government go on doing their own thing while you want to change PNG yourself. The problem we all know is simple: WE NEED GOOD LEADERS TO LEAD US. I am an advocate of free education and health for all PNGians as long as we have good leadrs in government.
****! png and everything it stands for. it would be better if my own people ruled my province. other guys **** up and we have to clean up the mess by suffering. who cares what you mother****ers think also.
highlanders and sepiks rule this country and all we sit and do is think of how we can changed this country. only words and no action while these two dominant group of arseholes continue to **** up.
Bro, I am a highlander and I agree with you. Looks like png is ruled by certain tribes, and I think it will continue to remain like this for a long time unless we do something. I agree with you and one of the solution is to rule our own provinces or we shuould divide into state and seek for independence to 20 separate countries based on the provinces we have. I am from goroka and I do not care what the rest of the country thinks, but everbody get back to your own provinces and run your own province. I think we can only get better through this way. We have been struggling and fighting in vein for a very long time, and it looks like the battle is endless.
Now that's an idea! Anon from Goroka, I like your idea. That could be a start, then build up from there to have a national govt. with representation from all provinces. Then, we don't have too Somares in NCD running the country as if they own it.
But, maybe not as far as independent states/provinces. maybe have something like having a visa to be able to work in another province and one can only contest in their own province to be able to rule their province and they gotta be a true candidate by birth. If one is squatting illegally without any work or legit business visa than they need to be sent back home. Too many squatters in Moresby and due to unemployment have lead to crime, etc.
Bro, I do not think you are discussing constructively here. I think this topic of discussion is about providing some solution to the type of govt administration we have. You cannot use the lack of knowledge of png by most of the world to say that what we are suggesting is stupid. You cannot put png on the map and make rest of the recognise png unless you have an effective govt who can keep up with rest of the world. Some of us have seen that there is nothing wrong with the democracy type of govt rule that we have, but what we are discussing here is that because of the so many diverse cultures that we have it is hard to implement the rules of democracy properly. Therefore alternatives like each province having control over their economies probably like autonomy or something would help weed out people in certain areas of png who use png's wealth to satisfy their fellow tribesmen. Many a times I have observed people in this forum to be blasting each other for no good reason without discussing the ideas constructively.
