PRIME Minister Sir Michael Somare has said he will not step down as leader of the National Alliance party.
In an attempt to set records straight and water down the speculations, Sir Michael said he will not step down as the head of the political party he created.
“I am a practitioner of the democratic process of the Government in PNG,” he told participants at the Waigani Seminar in Port Moresby last Friday.
“Since 1968, I have sought the mandate of the people of East Sepik. Before the 2007 National Elections, the National Alliance party voted me in as the leader of the party.
“We won the government over a year ago and Members of Parliament agreed to support the National Alliance party to form government,” he said.
“Therefore in accordance to the National Alliance constitution and the mandate of the people of East Sepik, I will remain the leader of the National Alliance party until next National Alliance convention when the new leadership is decided by its members,” Sir Michael said.
Also at the seminar which was attended by almost 1000 people, Sir Michael said he would not undermine the powers of institutions such as the Ombudsman Commission which he helped establish.
“I want to assure, not just the attendants of the Waigani Seminar, but the people of Papua New Guinea that I would be the last person to undermine the institutions that I played a pivotal role in establishing,” Sir Michael said.
“I want to qualify, however, that as a member of the legislation it is my role to amend legislation and give rise to policies that keep up with the changing times and suit our circumstances”.
Sir Michael was referred to the Public Prosecutor by the Ombudsman Commission in June for alleged misconduct in office.
However, Sir Michael’s lawyers, Posman Kua Aisi, filed an urgent application to stay the referral.
Last month, Sir Michael’s National Alliance officials denied claims that some of the party’s prominent members were in a “secret meeting” to pressure the Ombudsman Commission to refer the Prime Minister for alleged breaches of the Leadership Code.
This was according to an April brief received by the Post-Courier, but despite NA executives denying that the document was “full of crap”, the document reportedly portrayed that Sir Michael’s own men supported the referral.

Somare might be a ‘Sepik Tyrant’ but who is your alternative to Somare?

1. Somare leading Pangu Pati almost won by an absolute majority in the 1982 General Elections after he was defeated by Sir Julius in a vote of no confidence [the most unstable period of PNG’s political history thereafter].
2. Somare’s NA party won the most seats in the last election and the previous (2002).
3. Somare has never become PM through a parliamentary vote of no confidence. He always sought and got the mandate to govern through a duly established democratic process – that is through a general election.
4. Somare has never nominated nor has he accepted the nomination of alternate PM in a parliamentary vote of no confidence [this is fact and verifiable through the HANSARD]

Deport foreigners who fake marriages, govt urged

PRESIDENT of the public employees association Michael Malabag has called on the Government to deport foreigners who are using PNG women as a front to expand their business empires.
Mr Malabag told The National yesterday that foreigners were faking marriages with PNG women to extend their visas for an extra three years in order to do business in the country and send their profits abroad. He said a particular group of foreigners in the private sector were employed in jobs that were restricted to nationals.
Mr Malabag made the remarks relating to a statement he issued earlier urging the Government to immediately act on the spiralling costs of living and the price hikes of basic goods like rice, tinned fish, flour and sugar and the contributing high fuel prices.
“If the Government is constantly portraying a rosy economic picture with millions in savings and earnings, why are people going through this painful period?”
He said ordinary PNG families were quietly suffering as they simply could not afford high food prices, let alone salvage what little they have to buy kerosene, zoom, petrol and diesel.
Mr Malabag said foreigners, especially Asians, were exploiting the situation by paying next to nothing wages for unsuspecting nationals who only wanted a job to sustain their family needs.
“This is a violation of the Geneva Convention and it is up to the Labour Department to investigate these business houses and identify those unscrupulous owners who are violating rights purely for profit,” Mr Malabag said. He further described responsible key departments of Labour and Foreign Affairs and Trade as “slack”.
Mr Malabag said the two departments needed to get their acts together and immediately conduct investigations on those foreigners as Papua New Guineans were the ones who lost out at the end of the day.
“If these two agencies are incapable of carrying out investigations, I call upon the Government to sack the departmental heads and ministers responsible.”

The second most senior person in Taiwan will step down because he is ashamed of his alleged involvement in the Kina diplomacy with PNG government. Somare was linked to this fiasco which is now causing the downfall of many reputable and respected figures in the Taiwan government.

Somare sent his briefcase carriers to go there and do the dirty job while he sat on his perch and watched closely the turnout. That is what he is good at, using the small boys to do all his dirty works like in the Moti saga. ‘Gas deal rushed’

TOP Government legal advisers have revealed that the Govern-ment gave them only 24 hours to read through and approve the 200-page PNG LNG Gas Project Agreement before it was signed.
The advisers and the Attorney-General’s office were given May 21 to provide legal advice and consider the approval of the agreement whch was signed the next day at the Parliament’s State Function room.
This was revealed in an exclusive interview with the Post-Courier yesterday.
A senior government minister (named) said for the first time, he felt “real political pressure” to deliberate on the pact within 24 hours, despite the fact that the Attorney General asked for a month to peruse the document. They also named a senior government minister (name known) as having overwhelming political influence on the whole process.
Two “junior” officers, an officer with the Department of Petroleum and Energy, and an expatriate consultant “who was an expert in the petroleum sector” were flying in and out of PNG trying to fast track the agreement, reportedly without the knowledge of the Attorney General and the State Solicitor.
The minister gave a clear rundown of what happened during the lead-up to the signing.
The revelations also contradicted Deputy Prime Minister Dr Puka Temu’s statement on Sunday that the agreement got legal clearance from the Office of the State Solicitor.
The minister, who did not want to be named due to fear he might suffer retaliation, confirmed that Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare did know about Petromin boss Joshua Kalinoe’s plea for Section 10.2 of the agreement to be amended so that Petromin could be included in the K30 billion LNG project.
Sir Michael has said he was not briefed on Mr Kalinoe’s grievances when asked a few weeks ago.

In his current state, Somare thinks PNG is his little clan, state institutions and corporations his family business, public servants his servants, people of PNG his slaves and the media a stinging wasp that threatens to bite him and land him in Bomana.

We all have added to the misery of this ill man by playing along without rebellion, we have allowed him to think we are his family slaves and servants. To make it worse his children , especially Arther and Bertha, who have early sympthoms of this disease, believe we are just their people dogs and cats who they can throw bones at anytime. Any like all hungry dogs, many of our people jump and fight over for their bones while the majority of us...starving.
