Repair Highlands Highway: Teine
By TODAGIA KELOLA
THE National Government must seriously consider the deteriorating condition of the Highlands Highway and provide funding to rehabilitate the road which is considered the economic link of the country.
The call came from the chairman of Constitutional Law Reform Commission and Kundiawa-Gembogl MP Joe Mek Teine last Friday when he presented K1 million to the Works Department as counter-part fund for the Asian Development Bank to provide finance to maintain the road network in his electorate.
No government so far has given serious consideration to the maintenance of the highway. All we got is piece-meal allocations to patch this or that and the only economic road link servicing over half the population of PNG is allowed to deteriorate to such an extent that it is impassable nowadays. We now have the LNG project. The Government is boasting about the economic boom and the best deal it has secured for the nation. However with the deal, comes the partnership responsibilities, such as providing a safe and secure infrastructure for the financier and development partners to move in and get the project on stream. Mr Teine said.
