A close ancestor of mine died in a mining accident in Kilsyth. I am in the USA and do not know how to get more information on the accident or his death. Would someone be kind enough help me?

William Abercrombie
Born 4 November 1833 in Kilsyth
Died 12 September 1862 in a mining Accident, Gartshore No.3, William Baird & Co.

In 1854 he was a mineral borer at Barrwood, Scotland
In 1861 he was an ironstone miner and lived at 36, Low craigend, Kilsyth

Also, are there photos of this particular mine?

Thanks ever so much!
Thelma

Sadly these accidents were all too frequent - now when people moan about the price of petrol, a reminder of the terrible human price we paid for coal can be found here:

http://www.pitwork.net/disaster.htm - and thats just the big disasters, individual deaths were a regular occurrence.

In 1923, on the 28th. July, 8 men were killed in an explosion at Gartshore Colliery. Grim reading. There are also some memorials in the graveyard in Kilsyth, with too many names.
