Greetings Mr. Smith,
What some might describe as more brutal we define as efficient. We believe in ending the confrontation rapidly. The nature of most confrontations today require you to take into consideration multiple attackers. Rarely are you fighting just one enemy. Because of this we believe that innovative spontainaity (gaseous phase)must come into fruition at a much earlier level than previous was available through a technique based system.
In taking into consideration the ranges of a combative environment ie; rifle, hand gun, knife and empty hand, Mr. Pick formulated a system (subset; American Kenpo Combatives) that enabled the student (soldier) to be able to transition rapidly between these ranges. A standard platform was initiated based upon his teachings by SGM Parker that provided a familiar position of feet and hands. This stable platform creates familiarity which adheres to the Law of Primacy in learning. Teaching the sets as the matrix of the system allows the student to see the connectivity of action. When the techniques are taught the student does not view them as separate entity's but instead sees them for what they are, sequences of action derived from the sets and delivered from a platform of set parameters. At the yellow belt level, students are able to enter the spontaneous phase based upon their limited knowledge because in their mind everything is connected from the beginning.(Law of Sequential Learning) We also take all sequences of action to the kill. Important in our belief to be able to take it to the kill and meter it down as strategy of the confrontation dictates.
With the combatives program that Mr. Pick established and taught to U.S. Army Special Forces 10th group he had a 100% successful after action report on all engagements of the enemy. This was achieved with only 6 weeks of training , which was all Mr. Pick was given before the solders rotated out for assignments.
The lessons learned and the principles that were defined, were put into the teaching of the UKF students. Some may call it more brutal we simply call it efficient.
Thank you for the good and courteous questions.
