I have been reading a great thread about not cheaping rank when giving it to students. On that note, (and I realize this is probably a common topic), who can achieve the rank of black belt?
I have heard the adage "average people don't get black belts", but I have seen many many people with black belts that are far below the same level as others. Do you give a student a black belt becuase they are really good at forms, but average or less than average at the rest? Or a great fighter, but can't remember techniques or is less than average at those.... or any other combination? Do you give a student rank because they have persevered through the trails and tribulations of the art and they hit their 4-6 year mark and they are moved up? I realize that not everybody is created equal, but as a black belt shouldn't you be able to protect yourself? That is the idea in my eyes anyways...............
