Depression is not a sign of weakness,
It is a sign that you have been trying to be strong for too long. Put this as your status if you know someone who has or has had depression. Will you do it, and leave it on your status for at least an hour...

With respect, you are on the right track, but have a view point based on an experience not yet defined. Depression is suppression turned inward, the only the reason for the suppression IS your strength and passion, it has been targeted for suppression by whom ever objects in any given time. From childhood to manhood the the experience dictates the emotional response. Unless one has the ability to differentiate between the past experience and the present the future will be suppressive and depressive.

Recognize that you are an individual identity with an individual reality an purpose, ignore the false data an stick to what is true for you in spirit, trust yourself
in regards to your human experience and you can and will achieve great things.

Here is a link...Another view similar...

http://www.selfgrowth.com/articles/Depression_and_Suppressed_Feelings.html

So much of it has to do with chemical imbalance many mention...

http://psychcentral.com/news/2006/11/09/depressions-chemical-imbalance-explained/398.html

Pretty complicated, should be handled by those who have diplomas in the subject, it is not looked at as weakness anymore one time it was, and maybe in some circles still is, the study by qualified people have brought it out of the closet...

Regards,
Gary

Pats good intentions in bringing up this subject has to be commended but Depressive Disorders is to serious for a open discussion, leave it to experts in this field.
An intimate chat with a friend you know suffers from depression helps, open conversation on a forum by well intended kenpoists would not.

The subject, brought up as a statement does make it open for discussion it appears...

I added some information and mentioned the need for those who have a knowledge of said problems, to be included in ones desire for help!!!

Many have expressed openness being one way to help self and allow others to communicate...Similar to AA meetings...

Again very much, out in the open now about this huge problem...
Those who suffer should seek professional help also...

Gary

There are many causes for "depression". Ultimately all of it is based in brain chemistry. Depression may be situational. Depression may be nutritionally based. Depression can even happen fron not getting enough sunlight. You can also be born with a tendency toward it and this couyld be based in brain structure and thus chemical issues. So there are lots of causes.

But I do need to say that depression many times may involve the person indulging in their own self pity.

Also I need to say that depression may be based in a bad childhood and this is almost always caused by the parents and usually the mother. Many mothers damage their kids through very subtle abuse. You can read the psychoanalyst Alice Miller to understand this.

My first recommendation for anyone with depression is to get on a good multivitamin and get in the sunlight. Then you need to find a really good doctor to prescribe for you. Not just some GP that gives you SSRIs.. There are many very high tech meds that can help IF you have a shrink that knows what they are doing..

OH and lack of sleep can be an issue as well.

I say all this so people can feel better. However I also need to say that nothing ultimately matters in this universe since it is all one big "fluke". Nothing is good or bad and nobody ultimately cares about anyone else. We will all die and then there will be nothing. So it is not like this depression issue is all that important since nothing is important because nothing means anything. But it is better to feel better and not be depressed..
