Irish Anti War Movement Announcement
IRISH ANTI WAR MOVEMENT
Press Release - March 26th
THE IRISH ANTI-WAR MOVEMENT CONDEMNS ISRAELI STATE ASSASSINATION OF
SHEIKH YASSIN AND CALLS FOR SUPPORT FOR PROTEST AT ISRAELI EMBASSY.
PROTEST AT ISRAELI ASSASSINATION OF SHEIKH AHMED YASSIN.
Saturday 27th March at 2pm,
Israeli Embassy, Pembroke Road, Ballsbridge. (Opposite Jury's Hotel.).
Organised by the Islamic Cultural Centre and Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign.
In a statement the Irish Anti War Movement condemned the assassination on Monday March 22nd of
66-year old wheel chair bound spiritual leader of Hamas, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, by the Israeli
armed forces. The IAWM is supporting the protest called tomorrow at the Israeli Embassy in
Ballsbridge, Dublin, by the Islamic Cultural Centre and the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity
Campaign.
Richard Boyd Barrett, chair of the Irish Anti War Movement said:
"The assassination of Hamas, spiritual leader, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, on Monday should be roundly
condemned as an unacceptable act of Israeli state terrorism.
While the suicide bombing attacks of Hamas activists must also be condemned, the targeted
assassination of their wheel-chair bound political and spiritual leader is an outrageous act
that will further fan the flames of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."
"The blame for escalating cycle of violence between Israel and the Palestinians lies
overwhelmingly with the Sharon government. Sharon's policy of constructing a massive apartheid
wall around the Palestinian population is part of a cynical attempt to re-partition the occupied
territories and grab more Palestinian land for Israel."
"It is the latest example of Sharon's attempt to use the so-called 'war on terror' to smash the
legitimate resistance of the Palestinan population to the illegal and brutal occupation of their
land." "The on-going Israeli occupation of Palestinian land; the routine violation of every
basic human, civil and political right for the Palestinian people, by the Israeli state, are
the root causes of the escalating violence. The polices of the Sharon government have
confirmed for millions of Palestinians that Israel is simply not interested in a just
settlement of the conflict. Suicide attacks are the terrible but predictable result of
Palestinian despair in the face of Israeli aggression."
"The decision of the US to veto a UN resolution condemning the assassination of Sheikh Yassin
is typical of US double standards when it comes to terrorism. Terrorist attacks against the
US or its allies produce outraged condemnation and justify swift and brutal retaliation.
Terrorist attacks by the US itself or her ally - Israel are sanctioned or produce no more
than "concern"." "US hypocrisy and double standards in the Middle East are the seedbeds of
terrorism and violence. Only real justice for the Palestinian population and an end to
US interference in the Middle East, can halt the terrible conflict that is engulfing the
region "
