M20 Gearbox Trouble

I have a 1947 B31 with the M series gearbox. After rebuilding the box (new bushes, bearings, springs and the little detent and spring that shoots across the room the first time you do it) the bike goes from first gear to second nicely and then to a false neutral. If I try to shift up again it goes to fourth gear. Downshifting from fourth with get it into third. When it goes into the false neutral instead of third I can downshift into second again but another attempt at third will only bring the neutral again. It is also quite hard to shift into the proper neutral, even when rolling. Reaching down and doing it by hand for some reason seems to be the only way I can do it. Before tearing into the box again any guidance as what to be looking for would be very much appreciated. Thank's a lot.
Jeff
