In the sidecover there is an adjuster. This should be adjusted correctly. If the link is too long it will drop nicely into first gear but you won't get it into the higher gears easily and the reverse goes for the higher gears. I always adjust the gearbox in such a way that it will just engages first gear when pulling the lever up. From there on it is just some finetuning with half a turn at a time.
