Hi Charlie just a quick message. I spoke to Sid the other day and its only an idea but theres a diophram inside the carb` and if it splits can cause the bike possibly to loose power or misfire, it was only a thought but check it out. Kevin. (Yes I know its spelt wrong)

thanks for the help
I have a manual and it shows two large diaphragm (i think its spelt right) which i can get to they look ok but it also show two small one which it looks like you have to remove the carbs to get at. I'm pretty sure its a diaphragm problem. I drained all the fuel off as per sid's suggestion but that hasn't sorted it.
Cheers

I can only assume that this is a very common problem with the 535's as I had the same problem and forked out for a hundred fixes before I accidently fixed the fault myself...
The background: I bought my 535 from a guy in Doncaster who claims that he has done less than 1500 miles in four years, the bike mostley sat in his garage and only came out once a year for an M.O.T. mmmmm! anyway I got the bike home and it went great for a while but (especailly on wet & cold mornings)it started to splutter occationally, after a few months it was so bad that it became dangerous... Garage No1 cleaned the fuel pipes and carb's and charged me £155, Garage No2 (Yamaha garage) did the same 1 month later and charged me £321 (they also fitted a new feul tap) but the problem came back within days (I did have words with the garages but that another story).. It got so bad that I decided to get rid and advertised it somewhere on the net... I hadn't had any replies and so forgot all about the ad untill 4/5 weeks ago someone sent me an email asking for details.. I cleaned the bike up and removed the engine covers to give them a bit of engine paint which ment draining all the old shity oil and replacing the oil filter... well Fcuk me when I put the bike back together it went like a dream.. Honestly rain, wind and shine she has never spluttered once since.. I even leave the bike outside overnight and she runs great (I emailed the guy back and told him I decided not to sell).
I have no idea (I'm not very machanically minded) why changing the oil and filter cured my xv535 spluttering problem but it did.. I guess the work that the two bike garage's probably helped aswell but it was only after the oil n filter change that cured the beast... try it mate £30 bought new oil and filter, I wish I'd tried it before spending £500 on garage labour .. Good luck ~DL~

Charlie,
Has a similar problem with a VS800.
After the usual hours and loads of cash later turns out one of the carbs was a uk specked carb, the other an american (The VS was an american import)
She had a burning in her history and the fucker who sold it on had covered it up nicely.
Not sure if your machine is single or dual card, but check Clymer manual, gives the model no for correct carbs, check to see if your carbs are of the right spec.
