Timna's Wish Is Coming True!

December 20 2001 at 12:05 PM

Well one of them. Im getting a cat! Im an avid cat lover but have not been allowed to have one for years (since i was 6) since my mums allergic to them. But im gettign a Devon Rex, speacial breed for people like my mum. Its exciting and i'll be saving like mad after christmas. All the breeders i spoke to have litters due, so will get a cat within the new year. My present to myself.
Oh on the horse subject. Aud has grown so much! Kat's leg is healing really well to. I introducted my dog Lister to Kat and Aud today...he tried to bite Kat. She just ignored him and he lost interest. he's never seen a horse before. Audie liked him though. it was really cute.

Timna, I am SO happy for you. I dream of having another cat but my husband's allergy to them is all about their habits rather than their fur! Still, I live in hope that one day he'll find it in his heart to let Rachel and I indulge our passion for felines.

Enjoy your little rex when he/she comes and please do post a picture to your website so we can see it too.

Guess what! Guess what!

This is SO cool Timna. I just got a little kitten two days ago too. I have wanted a cat for ages. You cannot be a writer and not have a cat!!!! Or so I have been informed by cat lovers.

She is just a silver tabby, nothing so exotic as a Devon Rex, but she is cute...I called her Jess. She is sweet and playful and sleeps alot...
I can't wait for her to keep me comapny as I write.

Deb, that reminded me of my poor girlfriend. She got a new computer and a new cat on the same day. A week later she came back into her study after a short break and found a blank screen and the cat asleep beside the keyboard. Naturally she freaked out and it took her two hours and four phone calls to work out that the cat must have stepped on one of the arrows and scrolled the screen to the right. Her chapter wasn't lost, it was just on the left of the screen where she couldn't see it. Needless to say the cat was kept out of the study after that!

scary thought

That would freak any writer out... but i musta dmit i though you were going to say that the cat was dead or something... Fffew!
I cant help but think that i should be getting a cat from the RSPCA instead. So many die. The only problem is ofcoure my mum and allergic reaction. Perhaps i should have a word with her... as we are both for the RSPCA. Will let you know the outcome.

My kitten makes me smile alot - most of the time - she is so playful. I tried doing a bit of writing this morning and she was trying to walk across the key board and was climbing up the back of the chair, then swinging off the curtains....see what I mean about most of the time??? She is not supposed to be playing Tarzan on the soft furnishing!!!
Anyway Timna I hope you get one too very soon.

Kittens

January 6 2002, 12:54 PM

Well tomorrow is the danger day when i go to LOOK at the kittens at the RSPCA. I bought some food and catty litter today in preparation. I have everything else from our last cat. I was going to go and look at pet shop kittens but thought better... i would just want one of them... but i know i'll get one tomorrow... well it takes a day because they have to be desexed and mirochipped next door at the vets... so if i chose one tomorrow, it'll be a day before i can bring it home.
Wish me luck!

good luck

I will keep my fingers crossed for you Timna....:)

hard to walk away from

January 6 2002, 3:29 PM

Timna, I know what you mean about pet shops. I torture myself by looking at them sometimes and picking a kitten out, even though I know I can't have one. But if I could, I'd be going to the RSPCA too. There are way too many unwanted pets that need homes for me to be supporting further breeding by buying a pet-shop one.

When I was in Animal Liberation we were lobbying for people to be licenced (instead of pets) and trying to legislate so that only people with a breeding licence should be able to have a whole animal. We didn't win, but at least the council's registration fees are cheaper for desexed dogs. Unfortunately you don't need a licence for a cat and no-one monitors how many are having kittens. I was appalled to find out how many unwanted kittens (from pet shops) were ending up in laboratories and sold to greyhound trainers up here in Qld. Ugly stuff. I know people like to let their children see a cat have kittens but it's not terribly responsible if you don't know what will happen to those kittens later on. Sigh... Twenty years down the track and I can't stop being an activist!

Sorry about the rant guys. I think it's because so many pets get dumped over Christmas, and the fact that it happens every year doesn't seem to have lessened my angst about it.

What I started to say was that I think you are being very thoughtful getting your pet from the RSPCA Timna, and if they don't have a Rex just now, maybe you could put your name down for one.
