the quiz
June 29 2002, 3:47 PM
Holly and Kerrie, you guys are legends. What a marathon. Give me a day or so to get through this and I'll see what I can do. Right now I can tell you my most embarrassing moment was falling off my six inch cork platform heels in the 70's in the middle of Queen Street (main street of Brisbane city) at lunch time wearing a miniskirt. Ouch! Twisted ankle, permanently injured pride and the beginning of an ingrained fear of heights.
Why someone who is 5'8" needs six inch heels in the first place is beyond me, but my mother let me out of the house that way. I'll blame her.
Most embarrassing moment
June 30 2002, 12:58 PM
I thought I would follow your line Lou and pick one at a time. My most embarrassing moment was in grade 10 when I had a huge 2 year crush on a very yummy boy 2 years above me though of course he never knew I existed. We had a fabulous Science teacher from England who knew all about this crush. Anyway, last week of school, so cute boy was going to be leaving me forever when science teacher spies him sitting on the grass outside our clssroom. So, science teacher writes a little note and gives it to my 'best friend' (ha!). 'Best friend' takes the note outside, gives it to cute boy who reads it then proceeds to crash our science lesson. I, who am currently unaware of all that is going on look up and see cute buy in my classroom. I blush madly and watch in horror as he asks science teacher "Which one's Alyson?". After much pointing and laughing and enjoyment from rest of class he walks down the aisle towards a red faced, speechless, breathless me. My 'best friend' kindly gives up her seat for him and he sits down, takes my hand and introduces himself. The following conversation is lost to me now though I am sure I said not a word. Finally cute boy left amidst a standing ovation from my class.
Oh so embarassing. But just think, I got to hold hands with the man of my grade 10 dreams. Sigh... No wonder I am compelled to write romance.
Yay for great science teachers!
June 30 2002, 7:49 PM
Here is me...not a romance lover at all..totally enthralled with your most embarressing moment, Alyson. I loved it. I held my breath too...as I was reading it.

lLison,
Embarassing at the time, but that science teacher sounds like a heaven sent! Lol. What I would have done to have the boy of my year 10 dreams, to come and hold my hands for a few minutes. Lol but instead the boy who i barely looked twice at in years 5, 6 and 7 came back and rescued me (yes, i was in primary school with my boyfriend) and amazingly enough - we do remember one another.. how wierd! But that is my fairytale
Kerrie.

Alyson, no wonder you're writing romance. What a lovely story. I just wanted to turn it into a book straight away (young adult). And then of course, the Science Teacher would need to be matched up with someone wonderful... so many possibilities.
I've got to get my head away from romance! I've got a fantasy trilogy to finish. But it really was so touching. I remember having a desperate, desperate crush on a boy when I was fifteen, but like Kerrie I had no happy ending with it. Yours might have been embarrassing, but it really was a memory to cherish.
Re: all about Kerrie :)
July 3 2002, 7:58 PM
Isn't it a great story. I have always been one for mad crushes. At school I much preferred sitting in a corner thinking about whomever I was in love with that week. That was heaven! This one boy I was mad about for two years before out little meeting. He was such a doll. Then the captain of the football team asked me out and I had no idea what to do I was so used to loving them from afar it completely rattled my sense of romance!
I owuld love to write YA romance. Like the old Sweet Dreams books. I have actually started one but haven't found submission guidelines for any YA publishers.
what a dream!
July 3 2002, 8:18 PM
Oh Alison, DO IT! It would be a heaven sent novel, I don't know how to descibe the feeling i used to get while reading Sweet Dreams novels! THey really had a way to whisk you away, didn't they?! I think it would make a lovely story.. one that would have the reader's head in the clouds all day long lol (speaking from experience here). What an idea!
Kerrie
Re: all about Kerrie :)
July 5 2002, 11:11 AM
If Sweet Dreams is still published, just email the publishers, Alyson and ask for guidelines. If not, most of the big Aussie publishers do a line in YA novels. Kim is writing the Gina Champion mysteries for Harper Collins and Richard Harland started his YA trilogy with "Ferren and the Angel" for Penguin.
Worth a thought.
Re: all about Kerrie :)
July 5 2002, 11:34 AM
Sweet Dreams were the kind of books you could read after a bad nightmare.. and feel totally at peace! By the time you felt sleepy again, you would reach over and switch off the light to find that you couln't even recall what was so 'bad' about the nightmare! Know what i mean?
It has some competitions going and one in particular closes in late August. The word limit isn't large and I think I can have a go at writing a short story! If I don't come a place, there isn't anything to worry over as the thought of being in the competition is enough for me.
Take care of you all,
Kerrie
Re: all about Kerrie :)
July 5 2002, 8:06 PM
Good idea. I haven't thought about it seriously but I will see if Sweet Dreams are still around. I will soon write my YA romance anyway and shop it around. If anybody sees any about and finds the publisher listed could you let me know. Thanks guys.
Re: all about Kerrie :)

Just thought I'd let you guys know that local writing centres (Qld Writer's Centre, NSW Writer's Centre) are a great source of legit writing comps and market information. If you're a member you get a newsletter with info on competitions which are not run by vanity publisher (sharks to avoided at all cost) and markets for everything from short stories and poetry to full length novels.
Of course, you can't go past the Writers & Artists Yearbook for lists of who publishes what

Cassie, that was ouchworthy. Honest of you to 'fess up to it here, though. So all is forgiven. It's hard sometimes when you're young to work out what's funny and what's not. I wasn't the practical joke type myself, but I had a few played on me and didn't enjoy them. Must have needed more work on my sense of humour I just never 'got it'.

well yes... i lnow now what is and isn't funny... better sooner than later! my mum said to me cause i can laugh at my self and popular culture that i sould be a comedian...yeah right! never!!! the worse thing in life is when you crack a joke cause you think its halarious and no one else laughs! but you. that has happened to me one to many times
Re: all about Kerrie :)
July 16 2002, 7:07 AM
Being able to laugh at yourself is such a gift, Cassie. I know I'm way too serious and sensitive, so while I'm happy to laugh along with people and make jokes, if the joke turns on me I can become quite flustered. I'm learning though. Just the other day I ran into a gutter, which should have mortified me because I'm such a good driver, but instead I burst out laughing.

I am completely accident prone! Constantly bangning into things. I think I have no spatial sense. I must think I'm thinner than I am. I have no sense of direction. I walk into a shop and when I walk out, without fail I will turn back the way I came.
Talking of shops I have discovered a shop at Chadstone called The Fairy Shop. Went looking for tiaras and this place is gorgeous! All the staff wear princess dresses and garlands in their hair. They sell fairies everything magical and pretty. They have a back room where kids can have parties hosted by fairies. It's sooooo wonderful!

Alyson, for once I wish I lived in Melbourne (or was visiting at least). I'm having no luck whatsoever finding a suitable tiara. I think there's a fairy shop in the Myer Centre in Brisbane. I might try there.

Good for you Cassie. I think writers need a healthy dose of 'delusions of grandeur'. What we're trying to do is hugely arrogant (expecting other people to pay money to read what we have to say) so egos are in order.
And I am the girl who thought she was a kidnapped Russian princess...
I'll give this a go.

louise: something i relised only recently in writing is that you do need alot of confidence! it comes out in your writing i think ...
Re: all about Kerrie :)
July 31 2002, 6:16 PM
Cassie, thank you so much for saying that. Some days I feel super confident and like a 'real writer' and other days...I don't. My experience is that even having a book on the shelf with your name on the cover doesn't change that. It's something that comes from the inside, not the outside, and no amount of lovely fan emails really count as much as when I read back over something I've just written and think, "Wow, that's good."
Don't wait for someone else to tell you you're good, do it yourself.
And I just love the responses to this thread - thanks for setting it up Kerrie. You guys are all so different. I must get my A into G and do it myself. Although the question of the crayon makes me squeamish. My initial reaction would be to say pink, but I remember vividly when my girlfriend rang up in a panic after she'd just changed her toddler's nappy filled with pink poo. I raced over because she'd thought he was bleeding internally or something, then we discovered the slobbered end of a pink crayon under his pillow. Eeeew.

i hate the days that its hard to write on expecially if there are perfect sercumstances to write in!!!but thats life... i wish i could stay home and write every day it is my dream! i definatly want my book done buy the end of 2003 and hey i found out in drama the producer wants me to have the lead, an ex best friend of mine is jellous and i dont know if i will take it in fear for not remebering all the lines!
Re: all about Kerrie :)
August 1 2002, 7:50 PM
Take the part Cassie - do not even think of not taking it. The only the you regret in life should be the tings you do not do! If you don't take it you will be sorry.
From an old drama pro - learning lines is a cinch. Just say them over and over and over again until you are saying them in your sleep! Highlight your part and practice alone and with the group. Practice walking around and acting the lines so that the movements and ebbs and flows of the lines become natural and instinctive.
See easy!!! What's the part?
I had the lead in our senior play which was the Bertolt Brecht play "The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui" a take on the rise and fall of Hitler but set in 1920s Chicago! We had way more girls than boys in the class with way more male parts so we did a turnaround play. Girls played male parts etc. So I played Hitler with a an American accent in my senior play. How hilarious!
kerrie flanagan
Horrah for Bertolt Brecht!
August 2 2002, 6:44 AM
Ali,
I did an assessment on Bertolt Brecht in year 11. It was on a play (can't remember the name) with a character called Grucia in it.. something about a baby taken away from it's mother?
Other than that, I did my senior production on _A Midsummer Night's Dream_ by Shakespear. It was a great two nights of production! We had out stage outdoors and shows started at 6pm.. the est production the school has had yet!
I played Theseus, the king and cobweb, the faerie (you can ask anyone and they'll tell you that I was the best faerie!!) Lol.
Cassie- from experience.. take the part and don't look back! If you enjoy acting then never hold back. I was with the Australia Acting Academy for 6 months before I left (my parents struck a bad time with money so i quit to save them the money it was worth). If you don't do it, you'll look back in years to come and say "hey.. i didn't take that part because so-&-so was jealous and i was scared... though i wish i had now, cos i haven't seen her in years!" trust me- after this year you won't see her as much again.. take the plunge and DO IT.

the play is called 'dags' when i found out i thought that will fit me in nicely ...lol well its not official who gets the parts but i know from the director she is strongly considering me .... i dont know that i want the part because you have to kiss someone on stage. you can say no big deal but i havnt had a first kiss yet and i will not let it be some crapy fake one that meant nothing! .... i told the director she thinks maybe it can be worked around but as i said before it is not definate that in will play the main character! ... we have only 2 guys to act and 4 male roles ... our drama teacher wont let guys play girls becasue she played a guy when she was in high school and hated it! oh well looks like they will work hard!
Re: all about Kerrie :)

Cassie, I've never done any acting, but I can imagine it would be hugely useful experience for a writer. Even just the angst of learning and doing. Any experience where your emotions are aroused is great because you can remember how it felt later, whether your blood was pounding, your mouth dry, an empty feeling - where? Stomach, chest? You can use all this stuff in stories when a character is apprehensive. Plus, when you're going over your work editing it, you read it aloud to make sure the dialogue works. How much better would that be if you'd trained as an actor?
Think of it as part of your writing practise and go for it!
P.S. I don't think a stage kiss would be like a real kiss, and who knows, the boy they pick for the lead could be scrummy
Re: all about Kerrie :)
August 3 2002, 7:58 PM
Oooh, yeah! It cold be one of those great romances where the lead actor and actress fall mad in love in time for their first performance kiss. Or is that meant to be the lead and the understudy? Ooh, so many choices!
Don't worry about it until (or if) it happens, Cassie. Wait to see who gets the parts and you will all become comfy with each other and it would be a supportive experience.

well we have been doing read throughs (practacing) and it was soooooooo embarasing yesterday!!!!!!!! instead of kissing him i have to lie on top of him and pretend whilst every one said no this way or no this way i couldnt help but be embarased!!! i think of it as another sacrafice towards my writing career as i have made many sacrafices already! but its soooooooo embarasing!!!!!! you know what the guy said to me? 'you chose the part' i said 'no i didnt! i was cast it!' hes not as bad though as i ave made him sound, but hes far to enthusiastic about the whole production and all in all hes really scary. you guys are all probably having a great laugh after reading this which okdoke with me. something they were going on about in drama was weird the director and him were arguing about telling me somthing ...i dont know what it is!!! somethimes people can be really anoying!

Cassie,
sounds like fun hehe.. okay, okay- i had a chuckle! but only because you sound so innocent- its very cute! don't worry.. you can ask anyone i went to school with but i would be dating boys in school and still not hold their hand in public too often as all the girls and boys would look and say "i didn't know they were together.. look at the way they do this/that" i hated it!! hence i suppose why i loved meeting my 'ideal' boyfriend once leaving school. it was amazing! no one looks at us strangely if we forget to kiss one another goodbye (lol i'm not only clumsy but very forgetful!) i mean.. the stereotypical school relationship may as well be classed as "boy and girl hold hand and people gossip" its just silly! the reason i had a chuckle at your post is because i suppose i know where you are coming from with this! if i were asked to kiss someone, let alone lie on him like you have to- i'd be very embarassed.. thats why you have to be strong throughout this. acting doesn't only allow you to experience the stagelife but it allows you to transform into someone else.. get into the character cassie and become that lead role! you can do it- we all have faith in you!
