HAPPY NEWS!!! #2

September 7 2002 at 1:00 PM
Alyson

How wonderful is it that we already need a second HAPPY NEWS!!! thread! We are just a happy bunch of people!

Happy biffy to Fi, Jocelyn and Cassie! Hope you all get/got lots of pressies and have/had a day to remember.

Now for my happy news: football related of course!

COLLINGWOOD BEAT PORT ADELAIDE IN THE FIRST FINAL!!!! Heavenly... We borrowed a projector (my hubby works for Sony) and set it up on a huuuuuge screen in the loungeroom and had several friends over (all Magpies supporters bar one, but you need a little spice in life). We ate chips and pizza and drank lots of coke and had the best night! And for all of you non-AFL people, that means we get 2 weeks off and the next game we play is to go straight into Grand Final - so very very very happy! Feeling like the move to Melbourne was all for a reason...

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY

Alyson, I could almost feel you vibrating through that message - you excitable thing.  It's great to be so passionate about things, I'm sure that shows up in your writing.

P.S. Wait until cricket season starts.  You won't be able to shut me up

watching grass grow is more interesting :P

But then I've been exposed to it in my family since I was basically born, can't escape it really. Everytime you say your name you get asked about cricket!

Cricket in the OLD days...

September 11 2002, 4:01 PM

I like the one day matches, but not the tests. Too long....

I remember as a teenager I used to go to the one day matches. You know when Joel Garner, Viv Richards, Lilly, Max Wlaker, Imran Kahn, Len Pascoe - I could go on - :P used to play!
I would position myself in the stands as I close as I could to Imran Kahn. Thought he was a honey back then. HEE!

Joc, you will feel like that for ages, believe me! My friends are all turning 30 and we still feel like a bunch of kids pretending to play grown-ups - and its a blast!!!

HAPPY NEWS: Was driving to work at 8:47am and sooooo many cars had their lights on. I think it's wonderful when so many people can take the time to think of others, I was really moved.

Happy birthday to Jocelyn - 18, so young!  I hope you had a great day.

Kate, you dark horse, are you part of the Chappell family?  If I'd realised, I would have given you the tiara straight away - a secret royal in our midst and we didn't know!

political argument

September 12 2002, 3:31 PM

Well, I think you're lucky, Kate, but I won't go on about cricket because obviously it's not everyone's favourite subject - yourself included.

On the subject of happy news, I am pleased to see so many people talking about the issue of the proposed US aggression against Iraq.  Being a lover of fiesty political argument myself, I often find people reacting apathetically about issues that really stir me up.  Not this time!  This must be the most discussed topic in Australian pubs and dinner tables since Lindy Chamberlain cried, "A dingo's got my baby!"  And I'm very pleased about that.  There's nothing better than people having an opinion about something - makes you feel like you're alive when you stand toe to toe with someone and argue your point of view (in a civilized manner of course )

Another good thing about today is that it's windy.  I'm hoping the wind will all blow away today, because tomorrow I'm getting on a ferry to go across Moreton Bay and visit a friend on one of the islands.  I'm hoping it's not going to be blowy then.

hehe, I don't mind discussions about cricket, I just don't like the game

I think war with Iraq is inevitable. He has the capability for weapons of mass destruction and doesn't care what the UN thinks...

Softly softly

September 13 2002, 9:59 AM

I think, Bush should tread softly softly and make sure he has all his facts straight before he waltzes in to the middle east with guns blazing, flags waving and everyone siging God Save America.

dont get me started with political arguments or i'll never shut up!
but hey ....if you want to talk politics i will.

Re: HAPPY NEWS!!! #2

Oh yeah, lets talk politics. Now, does anyone want to discuss whether this proposed war is about creating 'peace in the free world' or whether it's actually about ensuring continuing oil supplies from the middle east? AND, isn't it funny that all this decision making about the war is taking place straight after the anniversary of Sept 11 - while American patriotism is still high.

No doubt about it, George W is a very clever man, if a little obvious.

And BTW, if anyone wants to tell John Howard what they think of the situation and/or give him a little advice about whether we should be joining the US or waiting until the UN thinks there's a problem, you can send him a message from his website: http://www.pm.gov.au/your_feedback/feedback.htm

Don't get me started on Dubya Bush!

He's a man who has never held a real job, a dumb man people say is really 'a lot of fun' (hmmmm, top nothc quality for leader of the free world), a popular frat boy who has been busted for drink driving and taking cocaine, who only got anywhere on his father's name. The only businesses he has ever been involved with ALL failed! He didn't even really win the election!!! Grrrrrrr

I am a dyed in the wool Democrat supporter - the US elections are my heaven. When in the US 2 years ago I went to a campaign rally and shook hands with Al Gore.
Go Democrats!!! Go go go!!!

Anyway, in my humble opinion, Dubya is a republican which means he likes guns and big business and war is the best way to combine noth of those things. The UN investiations into Iraq were supposed to be impartial and the US supposedly had no vested interest, now they are showing what a lie that was. The times Republicans have the highest popularity ratings are during war time. George Bush Snr's highest ratings were during the Gulf War.

They realise they can no longer really demonise Osama and since they need someone to be 'evil' so they can be 'good' they are turning back to a tried and true favourite.

I told you not to get me started!

go Alyson!

This is such an interesting debate. Although, debate isn't really the right word, because that presupposes that there could be people out there who think GeorgeW is right

I'm so pleased with the groundswell of feeling among Australian's about this. Finally ordinary Aussies are getting up off their butts to say something about politics. We can only hope that our paid representatives take note!

Yes, very conveninet to urge everyone on about Iraq so close to the anniversary of Sept. 11th.
Are they all so gullible in the US? Do they really want to drag the world into a nasty war because Bush cannot get his popularity by any other means?

Revenge only goes so far, it does not bring back any of your loved ones. It does make you feel better, but only for awhile while the anger feeds on anger. Revenge only provokes another retaliation and so it snow balls. Meanwhile Bush is grinning all the way to the polling booths.

What scares me is that everyone seems to say, "yes, Mr president!" "No, Mr presidant!"
Why don't we say, you go for it if you want too, but we're not going to come and play.

This is not a very good subject for the "Happy News" thread.
I think we should post a new one called "Soap box".

HAVE PRINTED OUT MY STORY IN FULL AND WILL BE POSTING TOMORROW MORNING!!!

Phew! It looks like a real proper manuscript - so much so I had to take a photo of it with my M&B letter, my garland and my pink quartz crystal.

I've spent the last week cutting 5000 words (a lot of fun - who said your second draft should be 10% shorter than our first - Stephen King again probably!) from the finished product - found I had certain words I could cut pretty much in total - I found I have a real love of the word 'so' - cut hundreds of them!!! Had two hours a night, amidst plans to start my new position next week, getting nervous about C'wood playing tomorrow, wedding anniversary today ( )but it's finally done!

About to print out my cover letter and synopsis then wrap it all up in a big rubber band.

Just thought you'd all like to know...
