I sometimes do this to bring myself into the writing atmostphere. it really helps to get me into the story from the last time i tried doing anything with it. you can either sit at your computer and imagine the feelings and thoughts, writing everything down as you go (notes do help!) or you can lay on your back, hands at your side and feet un-crossed.. closing your eyes and blocking out any sound or movement around you. Let your imagination take control. relax and enjoy.
imagine this..
its a cold morning, you peer outside and the wind is howling.. a lite drizzle of rain is up against your bedroom window and you lazily climb out of bed. pour yourself a hot mug of coffee and sit at the desk that looks out that same window, over the wetness. a spark, a thought comes to mind; a character who sits at her/his desk and admires the rain. you begin writing, not caring about the time of day or where your words are going, spuling out of your fingertips, onto the blank screen. the phone rings but you don't hear it. the doorbell calls out but you don't move. your mind is imursed in deep thought. this character, have they got the attitude you always wanted to write with? do they capture that certain atmosphere you always dreamed of catching? they are in the room with you. how do they look at you? how are they standing/sitting/moving? is this character looking at you, almost through you? when you have that feeling- that you have their attention.. have them say something. are they calm, angry, upset, smiling or crying? are their voices soothing to hear or almost so tense you could cut it with a knife? how is the atmosphere now?
NOW sit back from the computer. open your eyes if they are closed.
imagine this..
you are a writer - it is no dream. no imaginations. you are here and you are reading, feeling inspirational and at this very moment, you are in the mood to write a dozen things off the top of your mind. do it. don't hold back. don't "put it aside". write.
Kerrie, I really like that. I'm at the point now where I do feel that I am a writer, but how helpful would that be for people who still harbour doubts. It sounds like a great little meditation, and maybe also a good one to do at night when you're lying in bed, waiting to fall to sleep. Just to keep that feeling alive.
