Just had to let you all know I am currenlty typing this on my brand spanking new Sony Vaio laptop!!!
Aaaaargh!!!!!!!
It's sleek and black and all too gorgeous! Have had it for a couple of day and have been out every night so this is my first real chance to sit and play. And I am in love.
I have 3 days off this weekend so hope to christen her with some real keyboard work. Have to get her used to it early right?
Sigh, happy happy happy.....

(Happily putting out of her mind how to pay for the darn thing!

Alyson that's great news. There's nothing quite like the feel of brand new technology. Do you give your appliances names? She sounds like a girl. I wonder who she'd be if she was sleek and black?
My happy news is that I'm flying off to Sydney tomorrow for my agent's seminar and when I woke up this morning I thought "tomorrow morning I'll be getting ready to go to the airport" then a couple of hours later "My plane would be taking off now" (and I love take-off - brings out the rev-head in me). So delightful to have that lovely anticipation thing happening
Have a great time on the chat this Sunday. I'll hope to catch up with everyone next week.

November 22 2002, 9:15 AM
my laptop is dark , sleek and groovy (grey, though i wish it were black..) The laptop sounds gorgeous!! I got mine from the trading post for $890, 2-3yrs old. It was bought in Sydney, so it has even done a bit of travel in it's time LOL My word count is currently at 2,591 and going strong. I haven't had much work to do here this week at work, so in between doing tasks for people I have been writing furiously in my notepad.. whilst emailing Holly asking her for her word count. It is great to have you all here for the support of the things we want to write. Some of our families aren't as supportive as they could be and I'm sure all of us have families who are proud of the things we achieve, but I just wanted to thank you all. If I couldn't post my thoughts towards the one thing I truely love on this board then I'd go insane. Holly has been great! Our contact through email is going strong and we are coaxong one another to write as well as we are able.
So, to all of you, I just want to give you a big thankyou and lots of thanks!!
So glad I joined,
Kerrie

Kerrie, I'm so pleased that our community is helping you, and look at that word count. You go girl! Sometimes all you need is for someone to give you permission to follow your dreams, and I'm so happy that you're finding that here.
My happy news this week is that I've received an extension on my edits so I don't have to hand book three back in for another couple of weeks. Yay!!!! I've got lots more I'd like to do on it and the deal with writing schedules is you usually just have to do the best you can in the time allocated. Sometimes I've felt very sad about that, knowing I could have done more. But this time the universe really is looking after me, and so is my publisher Simon & Schuster Very grateful for that, and hopefully book three will be heaps better for it.
Means I'll be starting the next trilogy a little later, but I'm fine with that. Gives me more time to think about it.
Re: HAPPY NEWS #4
November 26 2002, 1:04 PM
Now that is *happy news*, Lou! I bet you are really happy about being handed the extra time to make book three the best you can.
Kerre! Whoopdy-doo for you! That is a great word count... and still going strong too! That's what I like to hear!
Alyson! Yay for your new Laptop. You cannot help but get inspired now!

Yay Lou! That must be so exciting for you. When is it due now?
Kerrie, you are on fire!
Thanks Deb. Lovin' the laptop! She looks like a stealth machine lurking all dark and mysterious amongst my Little Mermaid mouse pad and garlands and tiaras!
My happy news is I was offered Deputy Manager job at work yesterday. I knew it was coming up for grabs in the next couple of months but also knew they had people even outside the company desperate for it. It means I pretty much do the same job as now but get paid heaps more $$$. Very very happy! Feel relieved and refreshed. Yay!

Alyson, does the universe look after you or what! Way to go. More money and no extra work. Sounds like a great deal for someone who's trying to write as well. So pleased for you.
New deadline is 30th Dec so I've got another whole month. Means I'll be able to take the day off when there's cricket on. Yeeha! (Or should I say, Howzat!)

Heya everyone
Well I'm back home after 2 weeks of housesitting. It was an ok experience, but getting out of the house is always a good experience. And I did get one very romantic night with my bf in the middle...complete with half a dozen red roses and a silver amethyst braclet, then a romantic sit by the river in Kangaroo point.
So... happy news... well I graduate from my diploma course tomorrow. Lucky me.. getting to wear that every so stylish graduation cloak and hat, but it means im one step closer from graduating from my Psych course so I can endure looking like a dork for a few hours. Then its off to the Soulfly concert in Brissie tomorrow night. That is the comprimise my bf came up with when i complained that he was going to a concert after my graduation instead of spending it with me... so he brought me a ticket. Its not quite my ideal music taste but I've got the cd on now trying to get prepared lol

Graduation went ok. I looked like a goof ball along with everyone else there graduating that day. But we got a good laugh out of it and my boyfriend told me over and over again how proud he was of his bubby lol It made me feel good. And knowing that I managed another lot of above average grades was also a bonus. And my muse is slowly returning. Today I did very little but little is better than none. I have begun reworking on the less-than-great chapters of my ms, changing the story around a bit. Once i manage this then I should be able to move on past the speed bump I hit in my writing a few months back. It'll be a nice change.

Congratulations on your graduation, Holly. That's such an important milestone. And I'm pleased that your boyfriend appreciates all your hard work and is proud of you too
My happy news is that my editing is moving along a little more freely this week and I'm starting to get excited about Christmas and buying presents etc. I just love this time of year (it's so great when you have kids) and am really looking forward to catching up with all the people I only see once a year. That and eating my way through a chocolate advent calendar

Well this is the happy news section and although my news should be happy... I'm not feeling quite as overjoyed as I should. I've recieved uni addmission details and have made two courses...they are similar courses...majoring in psychology etc. However one is through Griffith uni in Brisbane, on campus, and the other is through Distance ed at UNE Armidale. I am more interested in doing my course via distance ed once again... as I would love to have more time to write and time to get a job. Yet as usual, theres no support from the family. Instead i got blasted from all angles at a family bbq today. Its such a fantastic feeling when everyone thinks of their own needs first! What are families for! The only support I've recieved is from my boyfriend. He told me that together we would get exactly where I wanted to because he's behind me all the way.
Thankfully my 2 week holiday in Victoria starts Saturday! I need it right now! Time for the two of us away from the criticism my family so openly throw my way!

Oh you poor thing, Holly! How much pressure you must be under!
Most relatives seem to think by offering you advice - even if it is not warranted - they are helping. They should listen instead!
Just follow your dream and try not to let all the unsolicited advice get you down. At least your boyfriend is supportive.

Thanks Deb, I know that following my heart is the most important thing and I'm not one to do as others say if its important to me. Mums just been threatening me with everything if i made that decision. Telling me that I won't have a home to study at. If she's going to lack support that much then so be it... distance ed means I can work full time so if it keeps up then I'll just move out. I'll make my definate desicion as soon as I get all the enrollment info from the other uni but im pretty certain that my mind is made up.

Holly, besides the kerfuffle following it was great news that you were accepted into a psychology course, what a wonderful subject to study. Hope it all falls into place for you soon and that you love whichever course you decide to accept!
My happy news is that I paid off my laptop yesterday and now it is mine...ALL MINE!!! (maniacal laugh ensues) So I have plastered a new blue 'Fairies Live Here' sticker on it and it feels like home. Yay!
Hope everyone's holidays are bubbling along happily.

January 10 2003, 9:52 PM
Kate, belated congratulations on your job - what are you doing? Hope you're enjoying it, whatever it is.
And Holly, I think you're doing the right thing being true to yourself. So long as you always do what seems right at the time, you won't have many regrets in life. Family can be a blessing or a burden, you just have to take the good and try to ignore or avoid the bad. I feel truly blessed that my family have always been supportive. When I've said I wanted to do something - even become a published author - no-one mentioned how hard and/or/unlikely it would be, they just said, "good luck". If you can't get the support you want from your family, you need to develop other support networks. Your boyfriend sounds like a real 'keeper' and we're here for you too. Fingers crossed for you.

Cassie, glad to hear you happy and relaxed again. It has been a stressful couple of months for you, hasn't it?
Shepherd's pie? Alyson, you always make me laugh.
I'm having a happpy day too today and don't even have food to thank for it! Selwa (my agent) rang this morning to discuss the cover for book three and some future projects we're working on, and the future just looks so bright and Selwa is always so upbeat and wise, it really did make me feel so happy when I got off the phone. And the feeling has lasted all day.
Lovely to be working with people who can make you happy and bring out your best qualities.

yeah louise, youve got it right. it was stress full and soon enough it will again. but i'll survive. it was hard when i had to play the main character in a play, the teacher told me the whole play was on my back and i had to carry it! i had to maul a guy i absoluitly hate and he hates me in return but all in all i got a great grade and believe it or not our teacher got fan mail saying how great we were. she put it up in the room. it was nice to see that all the pain and stress had been worth it

Lou, I am so happy for your great conversation with Selwa. You lucky ducky! What a thrill to be talking 'covers' and 'future projects'! Hee!
My hubby came into work and took me to lunch today which was a lovely surprise! Ate a mixed caesar, greek and chicken salad with zuccini patties, and apricot nectar on the side. Very very nice.
Happy happy food food!!!
(There's some sort of theme developing in my posts but I can't quite put my fish finger on it...)
My puppy is coming to stay all weekend (she spends time in the country house with my hubby's Aunt chasing kangaroos as well) and we are going to the Australian Open on Monday - so wish all the famous tennis players luck so I get to see a good game!
SMILING!

Alyson, I must say I've noticed a culinary thread creeping in and I'm not displeased. I could wax lyrical all day about the joys of chocolates and desserts, cakes and biscuits, and the pure pleasure of a perfect cup of coffee. Nice to see I'm not the only one appreciating life's epicurean moments.
My happy news this week is that two new writers - Skaldi and KylieS have come out of 'lurking' to join our merry band. It makes me very happy that you guys trust us with your precious dreams. And we'll be gentle with them, I promise.

January 29 2003, 7:46 PM
Hey everyone
Its been a while. I just got back from a 2 week holiday in Victoria... visiting the relies and throwing my bf in the deep end at a family wedding. It was great to get away... and while there I finally managed to work up the courage to get my belly button pierced. I'll be honest... it hurt me. I found I had less pain with both my tattoos but I'm happy to finally have gotten it done.
Also since getting back from holidays mum has eased up on her opinion of which uni course I should do. Before I left she told me there was no way in hell I could do the course I wanted to do, but since getting back, she now favours that course to the other I got accepted into. Strange that. Now I have no idea which one I want to do anyway.
Yet its nice to have options.

Louise, I loved the cover for 'Daughter of the Dark' so I am looking forward to seeing the next one. I haven't had anything pierced so I can sympathise with you holly, though i have been want to get a tattoo. unfortunately I'm old now and it would look like a bit of a middle age crisis!!!
I have no good news, teaching work has started and my 'finished Year 12' daughter is bored! though it is 2 days until the weekend! yaah!

YIPPPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEE!
8:30 last night I got a call from an editor at Mills and Boon London! Yes, an actual honest to God phone call!! It beeped STD and everything!
They love my book, my story, my characters, my humour, and they want me to do a couple of general and a couple of specific revisions and email my manuscript back to them in a week please!!!
If they then love it, they have a spot in their line-up they are looking to fill. So no offer, no contract but a big step closer, that's for sure!
Eek! So I am off to edit like a crazy woman for the next few days.
Please everyone send out all your spare happy thoughts my way - it can only help. I will be at the chat Sunday as I am sure I will need to take a breather and get my head screwed back on by then!
Yay, yay, yay!

Wow!! That's fantastic and wonderful!! I'm so happy for you Alyson!!! Congratulations!! You're on your way to getting published and I reckon that it will very soon! I can't wait to read it and see it. Wow, this must be so exciting for you. You must tell us what happens next.
My happy news (finally it's come!) is that I got into my uni course! I was waiting for the all important phone call and I received it today! Straight away my friend and I went to the uni and got the form signed. Now it's a matter of getting unenroled at the TAFE that I enroled in as a 'just in case I don't get in' thing. Then it's to enrol at the uni and almost time to start. I'm so looking forward to the other side of it which is the Professional Writing and Editing course which starts after enrolment!! YAY!!! There's subjects like popular fiction, novel writing, overview of the industry (as we jounalists, writers, authors etc come and speak to us!!) and few others. I'm so excited!! And now that this is all done I'll finally be able to write again!
Congrats again, Alyson!

I just recieved a message on that School Friends web site from a boy I was great friends back in primary school. I haven't seen him in nearly 30 years!!! What a blast!
I often think of him and the three other boys I was friends with.
No other girls in our group, HMMMM! Says something about me there I am sure...
We used to play football, ride bikes and skatebaords and play rough and tumble games. EEEgads! I was a tomboy after all!!!
It was wonderful to hear from him again.

A nice day
February 15 2003, 5:15 PM
Did you chat to him Deb? Or email at least? It's great to catch up with old school friends. Sometimes you do not see them for ten years and when you do it feels like it hasn't been more than a week.
My Mum is down in Melb for a week which is happy news. We had a girly shopping day - went to Queen Vic Markets, to city and to Chapel St and had a ball! Bought lots thought spent very little money. Brilliant, warm, sunny day. Lovely, lovely, lovely...
Re: HAPPY NEWS #4
February 18 2003, 6:08 AM
Deb, that does sound like fun, catching up. How did he find you? Are in listed at one of the reunion sites? And Alyson, your day with you mum sounds so lovely, especially as you don't get to see her regularly. Nothing like a day of shopping to lift the spirits
My happy news is that I attended the Brisbane peace march on Sunday and there was such a good vibe. I was worried it would be a war/terror/hate the US affair (which I don't agree with. Every American I have met has been lovely, it's just their government's policy [and our own] that I disagree with). But I needn't have worried because the march was like being part of a huge carnival. It was mostly mums and dads and kids, babies in prams, teenagers, grandparents - just normal people, all singing and clapping and cheering and happy. Happy about the idea of peace. It was such a wonderful positive group to be in. I can't tell you what a moving experience it was - the sound of the chanting, the smell of the excitement, the feeling of being surrounded by people who want exactly the same thing as I do - really a defining moment for me. My feet hurt at the end of the day, but it was SO worth it.
That's my happy news.

Happy news!!! First Collingwood game of the year tonight!!! Pre-season only but still super excited! Eek!
So, I won't be at the chat tonight as I will be jumping up and down in my seat watching the Pies win big!
Have a lovely chat and I hope I can make it to the party Wednesday night...
And Collingwood won!

Congratulations, Alyson. I'll bet you were excited. I was going to sit up and watch the Australia v Zimbabwe World Cup Cricket match last night but I've got a new Barbara Vine book, 'The Chimney Sweep's Boy' and I couldn't put it down. Maybe I'm starting to be all cricketed out

February 26 2003, 7:57 PM
Got a new desk on Sunday and it only took me 6 hours to assemble! Hoorah!
It's so spiffy! There are draws and filing cabinets and split levels and weird curvy bits... It makes my office feel more like somewhere I can work.
Re: HAPPY NEWS #4
February 27 2003, 10:35 AM
Only 6 hours, Mick!!!!!!!!!! HA!
Now I bet you will be churning out the words! Nothing better than a great desk I reckon.
Oh, and Bhoo the 'Pies!!!!! :P HEE! I just love hating Collingwood, it makes me all goosebumpy and full of wicked little tingles.

Re: HAPPY NEWS #4
February 28 2003, 7:47 AM
New desk sounds great and I think six hours is fabulous Mick. When I got my new desk last year and had to assemble it myself it took over eight hours - I stopped at 11pm because I thought I would pop an artery in frustration and restarted the next morning. I had no idea that these home-assembly jobs were such a drama. I'll never look at another piece of furniture that needs assembly again - forget Ikea for me!
Deb, you wicked little thing, bagging Collingwood. Must be all that cold and damp up in Toowoomba bringing out the fire and brimstone in you.
My happy news is that I saw Kim yesterday and got to cuddle Luka who is now 6 months old and already a child prodigy - warbling beautifully and quite loudly too - great voice projection. But a wonderful sleeper which, as we mums know, is the most important character trait a child can have
lil bit of sad news
March 1 2003, 6:08 PM
My laptop was stolen from my house last night while I was at work.
The funny thing is... they left the transformer behind, making it impossible to charge the battery. They'll need to shell out $60 to buy one from Dell before they can sell it in a pub.
The sad thing is... I've lost all the work I've done in the last 4 months. I had a backup but it is still sitting in the a: drive. I also lost my favourite game that was sitting in the cd drive (Throne of Darkness).
They also took my mouse (piece of junk), the case for the laptop and a pair of imitation Oakleys. They left behind my big collection of DVD's, all my books, my digital camera, and even a $20 note that was stuck to the fridge.
So, anyway, without a computer for at least another 4 weeks, I'll be a rarity on Sunday night chats but I'll still hit the message board a couple of times a week.
The universe works in mysterious ways...
Very unhappy news from Mick!!!!
March 2 2003, 1:26 PM
MICK! I am sooooooo sorry this happened to you! You poor, poor duffer!
I am terrible at backing up. My hubby has taken to backing up my stuff after I get off the computer and hiding the memory stick somewhere I can't fin it, like in one of his shirt pockets or somewhere weird where nobody would think to look.
Do you have the serial number to give to the police? Maybe you could let local Dell suppliers know so if someone is looking for the equipment the thief has to buy... Or check the trading post.
My hubby had a Clie (sp?) stolen at work and they missed the battery recharger, then a couple of days later a guy came into his store saying he had bought his Clie from the Trading Post and did not have a recharger could he buy one. Mark checked the serial number and it was the stolen one!!!!!! This idiot had bought it from his friend and not know that was where he stole it from.
I do hope the universe pays you in kind with some wonderful news. Buy a lotto ticket - you never know - but for sure your luck is set to turn.
Oh, no!
March 2 2003, 5:49 PM
Oh, NO, Mick!!!!!!!!! You poor thing!
That has always been one of most numbing fears... to have my PC stolen and all my work gone. I feel for you terribly....
Yes, yes, Alyson has had a brilliant idea. That maybe the way to catch the filthy mongrel who stole from you. It is worth a try at least.
Hope the Universe has real big plans for you from this rotten incident. Like the thief throws away the floppy disc and someone finds it who works for a publishing house and you get discovered!!!!! It's a nice thought anyway.
deb
Oh no!
March 4 2003, 6:20 AM
Mick, I can't imagine how you must have felt. I've never had anything stolen from me, ever, so I've never felt that desolation you must have felt - let alone that it wasn't just a piece of electrical equipment, but your work!
Yes, please do buy a lotto ticket and give the universe a chance to show you that nice things happen to nice people. Just at the moment I can't think what is 'good' about this, but there must be something. I've always found that when something (seemingly) crappy happens to me, something great follows, and that great thing could never have happened if the crappy thing hadn't occurred first.
Fingers crossed.
so sorry mick
March 4 2003, 10:26 AM
I am so sorry to here that Mick. I hope to universe pays you back good. You watch something will trip up the thief!!! I also think it is a good idea to report the serial number to pawn shop too. Take care buddy
sucks to be me...
March 5 2003, 1:16 PM
How's this for fun...
The bastard broke in again on Monday morning and stole the power pack. He did some serious damage to the window this time (because I sort of jammed the window shut) and also made off with a $200 bracelet. I have barely left the house since Monday lunchtime, but can get about now because the house has a spiffy new security system and is locked up tighter than Fort Knox.
The cops have been on the case hardcore since the second break in. I got a call from them last night to come and look at some recovered property and see if I could identify my baby... it wasn't there.
The good thing is... the writing still continues! I haven't hand-written so much since my days in Primary School and my fingers are killing me!
Re: HAPPY NEWS #4
March 5 2003, 5:14 PM
The nerve of this thief, Mick! I cannot believe it...
You poor thing. I have been broken into twice and I know how horrible it feels. You feel so vulnerable and violated.
Hubby was away with the army both times too! Figures...
Anyway, I hope the police catch this very rude word placed in here and you get your baby back. And the bracelet to of course.
Glad you are still writing, Mick though sorry your fingers are so sore!

Re: HAPPY NEWS #4
March 5 2003, 8:10 PM
Blinkin' heck, Mick! Persistant little beggar!
Could it be someone you know - horrid thing to say but the only time our house was broken into the thieves took my sister's guitar, backpack, CDs and car stereo system (still in its box). WE knew it had to be someon who had been into her room during a party as they only took young person stuff and did not even go through the rest of the house.
Glad to hear you have a security system. If he tries again I hope your security system includes a guillotine to the guilty hand!!!
Louise
incredible!

The nerve of some people! If it wasn't so...invasive, you'd have to laugh about it. Sounds like something you'd see in a movie (or read about in a book...hmmm, starts getting an idea).
But I'm glad to hear the place is all Fort Knoxie now. My security system is a 'white light' barrier and that works well for me. But I understand that some people live in the real world (with real thieves) where that doesn't work.
In any case, I've been super-diligent with my backing up since you told us about the break-in, so that's one good side effect from it - I won't lose my books!
My happy news is that I posted my line-edited manuscript back yesterday afternoon and was really thrilled with how it's turned out. I then proceeded to have a sleep in this morning and chocolate for breakfast to celebrate. Today I'm off to have lunch with a friend (and talk plotting - so it's business - really). Then a wonderful relaxing weekend before I finish the prequel plotting next week. Can't wait to write draft

Quest bookclub news
March 22 2003, 2:11 PM
Kate, that's fab news. I'd be excited too.
Well, in fact I am excited, but that's because something pretty wonderful has happened for me too. My publishers rang to say that the Quest Bookclub (fantasy/sci-fi section of the Australian DoubleDay bookclub) have selected my trilogy as their Editor's Choice for the June cycle (mailout), which is incredibly cool. They mostly only choose US, UK or big name authors as their Editor's Choice, and I feel so chuffed that they've picked mine. They even said in the letter to my publisher "we expect this new series to do very well" and they ordered lots of copies. Yay!
This is definitely the start of something big. So thilled that I have you guys to share it with.
Push me over with a feather!
March 22 2003, 3:32 PM
WOW!!!!!!!!!! That is the best news, Lou!!!!!!!
I bet you are floating over the moon. And the fact that they ordered lots of copies too!!! I mean, WOW WOW WOW!
This is the start of something HUGE for you.
Lot's of people will see your books, order them and tell their friends. And because they are editor's choice people will snap them up.
I am so happy for you.

Go Timna and Lou!!! Both with really incredible news!!!
To have them expose you book like that and order it to Lou! The best of both worlds.
And Timna, you sneaky little chook! What a fantabulous achievement! I am so so so so so proud of you. Now you and Deb can be editing buds together. Share advice on what brand of red pen works best and longest...
My new shop opened last week and it is absolutely amazing!!! We worked out buts off to help with the refit and it is now officially the most glamorous shop in Chadstone which is the glam shopping centre in Melbourne. Seriously beyond our wildest dreams. We are busier than ever, all our customers are over the moon and we are having a ball. Vewy vewy tired and glad to have two days off but loving every second of it. Now have to get back into a regular routine so I can write me some new books...

Alyson, you glamour pussy you! How exciting. So glad the 'launch' went well and that your customers approve.
I'm still buzzing about the book club deal, and have already had two bookstores ringing to organise me for booksignings when Glimmer comes out (in three months - can you believe). Nothing like getting in early. So this is definitely a happy, happy week for me.

Glimmer and FW and RED PENS!
March 25 2003, 2:40 PM
Well the stir up for Glimmer certainly is exciting!
As for FW its exciting in a different light!
As for the red pens... what is the best? I might have to take a trip to the stationary store.... arh Heaven!
Alyson
Stationery heaven...

Ooh, Timna, a trip to Officeworks? Can I come? Officeworks is my heaven, I can spend literally hours and hundreds ofdollars in that place. Most of my friends adore Bunnings in the same way but they own their own houses so I think that makes all the difference.
As for which red pen? I like hot pink ones - almost red...but yummier...
The woman who owns the company I work for was the chair of the Melbourne Fashion Festival and 4 of us from Victoria were spoilt enough to get invites to a business seminar day and fashion parades in the festival and it was great. Speakers from around the world, futurists, trend estimators, Nike's inspirational speaker... all fabbo! The Nike guy was so great and gave us all 'dream bands' - wrist bands with dream written on them that we have to tell our secret dream. I love it! It sits proudly with my tiara and garland and all my happy writing implements. Yay!
