Movies #4

If you don't see another movie this year, do go and see "Pirates of the Caribbean".  How I ever thought Viggo Mortensen was hunkier than Orlando Bloom in Lord of the Rings is quite beyond me now (apologies to Deb who I know will be gnashing her teeth about this). One look in Orlando's big brown eyes in Pirates and I'm in love!

He's William, a tortured hero, desperately in love with Elizabeth the Governor's daughter, but of course he's only a lowly blacksmith. Then enter Pirate Captain John Swallow (a very funny/swashbuckling Johnny Depp) who upsets everyone's lives - Elizabeth is captured by the real bad guys and Willam and Swallow, who haven't gotten along, have to team up rescue her. William discovers his secret past, Swallow reveals his real motives, and of course Elizabeth reveals that she loved William all along and not the stuffed-shirt Commodore she was about to marry.

It's sooooo romantic, and also delightfully funny and even a bit scary because of the supernatural element (which wasn't too much for me and I'm easily spooked). I feel like I want to go out and watch it again today, but I'll save it until next week and take Rachel.

A great movie to have watched when I'm about to write a 'boy going into the unknown' story myself.

P.S. I saw bits of Star Wars, The Princess Bride, Last of the Mohicans, Jungle Book and Blue Lagoon in this movie.  Not that it's cobbled together bits of other stories, but just that some of the themes/characters are obviously archetypes and I'm starting to recognise them.  Yay!

Saw Finding Nemo a cople of weeks ago and Dory (Ellen DeGeneneres' character) is a crack up! Very sweet, tender, funny film. And lots of Aussie bits so yay!

Saw Pirates again last night with my daughter and loved it all over again.  Also saw a trailer for the new Russell Crowe movie (can't remember the name of it, sorry) which just looks fabulous.  He's great with these 'leader of men' roles.  It's like Gladiator all over again but on the high seas.  Definitely going to see that one.

Master and Commander

Saw Master and Commander yesterday and just adored it.  I had trouble with the underwater parts and the huge waves (drowned in a past life - long story) but apart from some personal discomfort, it was a fabulous experience - well acted and the characters were so interesting.  Really great research for a writer.

Also saw a trailer for the LotR3 and realised at the end that I'd been holding my breath.  Looks very exciting.

Don't you  just love the way you can watch the previews and be so enthralled with them you get to the end and have to think hard to remember what movie you've come to see.  Magic!

We're holding out

In this house we are all waiting for LotR3. Its fairly hard to get to the movies at the moment so that one is planned for with the ex hubby. We were a bit surprised that the girls liked the movie and thought it might be a bit deep for them. The videos of the first two are played from end to end until they get to see the 3rd!!!!

My mum booked us tickets for LOTR3 for boxing day so we're certainly hanging out for it in this family also

I wasn't so keen on Master and Commander. I felt that the storyline was a little incomplete. The most interesting parts seemed to be just watching the doctor following his own dreams. He's the same actor that played Jekyll and Hyde in League of extrodinary gentleman.

But as far as Pirates of the Caribian goes, that has to be one of the best movies I've seen all year. I loved it, yet neither of my company at the time really enjoyed the film. Strange But I cant tell who i liked more... Orlando or Johnny lol

Yeah, I loved Master and Commander too - full of wit! Great use of humour!

As for RotK (LotR3) I am hanging out for that like clothes on a line...I adored the books, now adoring the movies!

Has anyone seen Love Actually?  Ally?  So many interesting movies at the moment.  And the new Neverland.  Wow.  The trailer took my breath away - I had such a crush on Peter Pan when I was little

What a great movie!

The definitely did a great job with the entire trilogy, and Return of the King was brilliant - tears, laughter, compassion for the characters.

Return of the King

Awesome event and well finished off by Jackson and co. I couldn't fault anything except the cheesy Legolas action sequence riding the trunk of the elephant! I had 'The Flintstones' theme blaring in my head.... hehe.

I was actually quite annoyed at the reviews which slammed the last half hour of the film. I think those last few scenes are some of the most touching bits in the movie. It brings things to a proper closure. I guess that's something the movie going public doesn't get with regular films.

Can't wait for Jackson to do King Kong or whatever he is doing and settle in to the Hobbit. Really looking forward to seeing his take on Smaug.

Oh, and Gollum/Smeagol for an Oscar as best supporting actor!!

I actually thought it was more like the Empire Strikes Back grin
