I thought this might be a good place to encourage each other when we're stuck on a piece of research.
I've just started with some research about pregnant coma patients, and am thinking I'm going to have to ring a friend whose husband is an obstetrician so she can pick his brain for me.
On the other hand, does anyone know where I would start with research on medical law?
I'd try a uni and query one of the lecturers. apart from that try the Australian Medical Association, they might be able to help you out.

Great idea, Ruth. I'm a 'go to the source' kind of researcher, rather than the 'nose around the library' or 'spend hours on the internet' sort. But there are times when you just can't find the person you need. So it's a good plan to be able to ask here and if no-one can help, at least someone might be able to point in the right direction.

Kylie, I think its a good idea to check your friends hubby. I just did some reserch but the only way to find it I had to go to a hospital and make an appointment to the music therapist. You made need to do ths same if you don't get what you need from your friends hubby. Good Luck

In the 80ties I read a report in German paper about this topic. After car accident a pregnant woman falls in coma; she was artificially nourished and attached to heart-lung-machine at Uni-Clinic in Erlangen/Germany.Her husband read books for her, daily came a gym therapist. The pregnancy was terminated prematurely with Cesarian section and birth of a girl. After that that equipment was switched off. The birthday of the daughter was the obit of the mother...
I personally spoke with a person, which awaked from coma and I asked (why certainly!), how is "there", what can you feel, hear and see? And I have experienced, that these person could see nothing, only "white", that one can all hear, want to move and speak....but one cannot!

I got onto my friend and her husband said that it would be something covered by legislation, so I'm going to try Skaldi's suggestion and contact the AMA.

Thankfully this is where my other dream of being a psychologist comes in handy. My main wip is a psychological thriller in which the main character is suffering from a sort of psychological problem and it means that my textbooks become the ideal sources of reference Especially next year when i begin my main subject of interest :abnormal psychology I can't wait.
But if anyone is writing a novel involving some sort of psychological disorder and needs help finding info, let me know because I'll be happy to help if I can or point you in the right direction of someone or something that can help.

Research is a vital part of writing. You need to do enough research so that you sound authentic but remember do not do so much that it takes you away from your real purpose - WRITING - remember to still allocate time for the current project/book/thesis. It is important not to neglect this even in a time of research.

That's very true, Veronica. And I love the way research can fit into your life. I've got a heap of library books here at the mo and whenever I get ten minutes to myself I plop down onto the lounge and open one up. Then when I have to get up and race off again, what I've soaked up has plenty of time to work its way around my brain and into my story.

My latest research project, for fun right now, but do have a story idea to go with it, is finding out more about the impact of adoption, especially on those who did not find out until they were adult.

Hi Everybody,
Louise it was terrific to see how you fit research into your life. I have been continuing to battle what I call my academic attitude to the whole research side of writing. I can get bogged down in the "details"....I blame 2 uni degrees for it.
Advice to use children's books for starters has helped heaps in the knowledge depth and seeing you just read and let it absorb (which is what I had been half doing lol) has helped to let go of the "formal" researching, which I really don't need.
