For those who write speculative fiction, there are a couple of workshops coming up this month at the Qld Writer’s Centre and they’ve asked me to pass the info on. Thought you might be interested in them.

The Art of Critiquing

Workshop with Lee Battersby

Thursday 25 January 6.00pm–9.00pm

Giving and receiving critical feedback is an important skill for any writer. Lee Battersby will introduce you to proven methods of critiquing, suitable for writing groups and individual writers, and show you how they can benefit your writing. You will have the opportunity to practice using each technique on a supplied text, on your own work, and works supplied by other participants.

The Proper Care and Feeding of Your Genre: Writing Fantasy & Science Fiction

Workshop with Lee Battersby

Saturday 27 January 10.00am – 1.00pm

The War of the Worlds, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Harry Potter…the speculative fiction genre – encompassing science fiction, fantasy and horror – is one of the oldest and most enduring types of fiction. In this intensive three-hour workshop, you will develop tools for creating truly imaginative stories. Award-winning author Lee Battersby will lead you through a series of practical exercises and help you think more broadly about writing within speculative genres. You will also learn where and how to research markets, and how to work on your unique and individual voice. Lee will pass on a set of skills and attitudes with which you can begin to craft cutting-edge work.
