LSD is short for limited slip differential. POSI refers to GM's design of this component. You do not need LSD to drift, however without it, getting the car to slide can be very difficult. Your LSD most likely is worn out (the clutches and springs do wear out) and it would be advantagous to have it rebuilt or an aftermarket differential installed.
