Yes i heard that

January 22 2003, 12:53 PM

Yeah, Tommy Mottola asked me if i knew of any good bands that he could sign, so i tossed off (heh heh heh)
a few names, one of which was 8-balls.

Seriously though, is that true?

Hey Josh

January 23 2003, 6:19 AM

Remember Josh, record companies are like women:

"Treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen"

You should try and get some free meals out of them. I've heard that record company people like to take bands to dinner.

shows 101 according to joshes eyes!

January 23 2003, 2:43 PM

for starters there's nothing to bargain over! he was some guy who bought me a few drinks.
secondly dont think this rant is for ne1 in particular its just my general opinion and its not specific to 8 ball!! i might seem hypocriticle to some people at points in here and for that i excuse myself!

here we go>> u need to make some noise (metaphoricly) to get a company to notice u (if u so desire to get $$) unless u've got your own worth while alternatives to show a company who seems interested in you (ie other offers from companies; a bloody huge fan base, tour record and set of releases/merchandise)then i can bet u'll either get ripped off or nothing will happen. Atm we dont even have ne thing to bargain with except good tunes. u need bargaining material to force them to make it well worth your while. i dont like to hear people speculating about bt8b "leep frogging" onto some label and everything being rosey cos it doesn't happen like that! if u want 8 ball to get ne where u need to come to the shows and not just think we'll get some deal and everything will be alright. i know ive got friendships ive made but i never see cos im always doin heaps of other stuff (working, girlfriend, band, other shows, sleep eat etc. its nice when i see people at shows whether 8 ball r playing or not cos u know we're contributing and above all its a good time!

its nice to have dreams but dont forget about reality!

"record deals" and bigger shows for bands dont fall out of the sky and ne1 who thinks that is being stupid! it takes work from the band, support from friends and fans and a whole slice of luck! if our little scene gets some weight of numbers then we can do something for alot of bands but thats not gonna happen without dedication and support from everyone. If u dont want to be a part of that then fine, You cant force people to come u can only hope they'd like to support there friends but its sad when people like bendog try to do shows and people who u'd expect to be regualars dont come! (and i can think of people who r my best mates and people who i hardly know). At times im guilty of not showing myself usually from other comitments but i honestly i believe i try to support as much as possible bands that i play with and/or like the sound of!

bottom line dont go to that party and forget that show, take the party to the show!!! and u may think thats hard but it all starts with YOU! if u like a sound, stand up an support it!! of course if u dont like it then know ones forcing u to go!

i'd expect that all of that is common knowledge for most people! i just got it off my chest for those who may not understand!

as before: hope for the best, expect the worse!

I (along with a few others im sure) just want to be able to play a little more than once every month and a half! and to more people than your local halls dismal bingo turn out! i'd hope that IF 8 ball ever gets bigger we can help out our friends with shows etc as much as possible!!

oh and cheers to those who do go to shows u know who u are!

amen

February 25 2003, 5:54 PM

i am in agreeeeance (is that a word? if so i spelt it wrong)

turnup to local shows is shocking... it's very depressing to play to a bunch of about 20 of the same people week in and week out, and half of them sitting on the floor or standing miles away from the stage looking comatose.

In order for anyone to sit up and notice the great Perth bands we have here, we need to pack the shows and show the bands our support.

that is about all i have to add....

but...

February 26 2003, 7:06 AM

I think it's sad to see people who support music JUST because it's local. It's not an entirely bad thing ill agree but people need to support music because its good not just local! Still support your mates and the bands with an honest heart but maybe it would be wise to distinguish between the slop and the more skilled song writters? That's without shunnning people who are still evolving as a band and without giving the 'skilled' band massive egos!

Maybe we are all ready supporting bands in this manner or is the support out there for bands blind and just about a night out, not about the sounds?

Any comments?

good one caitz...

April 19 2003, 4:06 PM

No one would ever see you at a show your not playing at. Maybe Waste of Space's crap turn outs are a telling indication of their own efforts to support other bands...

woah...

April 20 2003, 5:33 AM

take it easy tiger. we're talking about building some support, not tearing one apart! people cant be everywhere at once. It only works if people want to be involved.

alienating people will get you no where.

maybe you should practice what you preach caitz. you never go to a show unless wos are playing, and even then, it's in and out. maybe if you started to do what you are encouraging others to do, you might get people to stay and watch you, even if your music is terrible

im so pro unity (that sounds very suzie high school), i wish everyone would just get on with it and stop bitching but... im not perfect. i must admit actions speek louder than words and it is oh so very easy to become a hypocrite.

worse drama than home and away

April 21 2003, 7:41 PM

dances

Support your local ska band even though they just may stink
Support them despite what the real musicians just might think
It's ok to lower standards in the name of a good cause
You can bend the rules for us this time and give us your applause

SYLSB
It means so much to me
SYLSB
Its tough to play for free
SYLSB
Why can't they see
It's hard to be a ska band
When you live in a lonely
Punkland

SYLSB
No, I didnt say LSD
Throw away your PCP
And get the hell away from me
When everything should be OK
But it never ever seems to work out that way

SYLSB
It means so much to me
SYLSB
Its tough to play for free
SYLSB
Why can't they see
It's hard to be a ska band
When you live in Orange County
Punkland

yeah... um shrugs
