Anita vs Bai Yang

From Shanghai report, 19 Mar & lenlenfamily.com.

Comparison between Anita Yuen & Bai Yang: The character, Su Fen, leds a tragic life. She was separated from her husband during the war and lived under subjugation in the enemy-occupied Shanghai. She was resolutely loyal to her husband but when they were reunited, her husband betrayed her.

Bai Yang (the actress who acts as Su Fen in movie version) definitely has a lead over Anita as Bai has a traditionally, melancholic look by Chinese standards. Her every frown and eye movement gave her character more meat. In comparison, Anita is pretty and modern, not only is her Mandarin not up to standard, but she is also deeply immersed in a loving relationship. She would not understand how it feels to be betrayed in love.

Anita said as she has not acted in a tradegy for a long time, she has specially watched the movie version of "River Flowing East". She has accepted the role to challenge herself. She said that after acting in one crying scene, she found it hard to get out of character and had locked herself in her house for a week. After discussion with the director, she was told that this new version of Su Fen, is happy at heart even tho' she led a tragic life as she has love in her heart.
The reporter had rated her a '2' out of a '5'
(hey, the reporters should not jump to conclusions b4 even seeing the actual show yet. after all, a good actress can convince an audience that she is sad and has a tragic life without it being real. I mean that's wat acting is about, rt? One does not need to be a melancholic person to take on such roles or to have your real life mimic your character. Anyway, we've all shed tears watching anita's movies b4, so Anita go show them what u've got & shut them up!)
