yo to all you new asr heads..your mad lucky you got the dopest machine out i messed wityh the korgs and have an mpc myself...they are all ok machines but none match the asr...listen to shallows shit he's nice i got real grimey bangin stuff i wanna post..the list of producers makin incredible beats on the asr is long...necro..blockhead..masterminds..alchemist..old rza..evidence...j rwals..to name a few...just learn the machine in and out and be creative..and lets get this post bangin..ok peace
I JUST SOLD MY MPC 2000XL AND IM EXPECTING MY ASR-10 FROM EBAY ANY DAY NOW.. HOWEVER, WHEN I DID FULL OUT PRODUCTIONS, I WOULD ONLY USE THE MPC FOR DRUMS AND DRUMS ALONE.. I HAD SOME ILL DRUM KITS I'VE COLLECTED OVER THE LAST COUPLE YEARS AND USING 1/16(3) TIMING I MADE SOME SERIOUSLY ILL ASS GRIMEY DRUM PATTENS ON THAT MACHINE THEN USED THE TRITON AT THE STUDIO TO DO ALL THE KEYS AND EFFECTS AND SHIT OVERTOP.. BUT THE REASON WHY I'M GETTIN THE ASR-10 IS BECAUSE I NEED SOMETHING I SEQUENCE BOTH DRUMS AND INSTRUMENTS ON SO I DONT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT BOOKING STUDIO TIME.
i use both and i love my asr-10, but honestly, the mpc 2000 sequencer kills the asr-10 and i know some people are used to drumming on keys, but i prefer the pads on the mpc for my drumming. but the asr-10 is a beautiful machine!
I used to make beats with Reason and Cool Edit on my PC... Got my ASR-10R about a week ago. It took a little practise to get used to punhing in the drums on my midi-keyboard, but now, it has totally changed the way i see life. I've already made my phattest beat ever!
yo i really dont understand how anyone can say the sequencing on the mpc kills the asr...i think thats bull..if you are lookin for a real precise almost robotic sound to your beats the mpc does the job..i think its the downfall of the machine even when you shut the quantization off on the mpc it still sounds so robotic...the asr and eps just have that hitting swing which sounds like a real drummer is in your room...it comes dwon really to the person behind the equipment..i just no matter what ive done cant get that mpc to sound ruff and grimey..i mean its all what your into but im into that 90s b boy music like early primo.havoc..necro..evidence soundin drums..and i think the best machines hands down are the sp and asr for that ..well to each is own though i guess..
well na kid i dont think.. i saw them in philly and got a chance to speak with him and babu..babu is rockin the eps 16..and ev is strictly using the asr..and thats straight from the source on the first dilated lp he used the mp a little but not anymore..im out
ASR-has a better sampler in comparison to MPC2000 but when you say early primo and evidence they use MPC's on drums. Primo rocks the MPC60 which has a nice 12bit sampler so thats why it sounds gritty. Evidence does all his drums now on the MPC2000xl, its all about the person behind the machines, plus these people all have mad nice studios which will do more for your sound than a sampler every will. More people have luck with the powerful MPC sequencers but you can freak an ASR just as well. Bottom line for me is MPC3000 for drum sampling (8 individual ouputs is amazing), ASR for its nice sampler and effects plus keys, and the MPC3000 for sequencing everything. Or the ASR and SP would be a good combo I dont know much about the SP but for drums and bass sequecing it usually sounds dope. For me it comes down to first ASR-10, then MPC3000, then a professional studio!!!
im not gonna get into some dumb internet arguement but i was straight up told by evidence himself on 2 occasions that he is strictly programming drums on the asr cause it doesnt give him that robotic sound like the mpc now unless he told you otherwise i dont tihnk h3 was lyin to me ..so thats that
I have been using an MPC2000, Akai S950 (rackmount MPC60 sampler) and Korg - MS2000. I just got myself an ASR-10. I listed the MPC on ebay. I like the drum feel of the MPC, but not for $800. I feel the ASR has a better sound, based on side by side comparisons in my studio. The MPC is great if u have that kind of money. I am selling the MPC and will buy an external analogue filter.
ASR-10, u cant go wrong... other than the fact that it is wayyyyyyyyyy too heavy.
U R crazy if u think the asr is a better sequencer than the mpc.

They are not even in the same ballpark for christ sake!I have both and have had them for years. I love my ASR for sampling but there is no way you can compare the asr to the mpc. the mpc sequencer is way way way way more intricate on all levels . And I use the original mpc 60. You couldn't be that well versed on gear to say that. The mpc has way more control and capacity. Its an open template. It is a complete production center while the asr is a limited machine. very much limited. The asr sequencer section is basically a toy for a real producer. Good to learn the basics on but not if you want total control! Ask any reputable producer. I'm sure they will agree.
I have gotten numerous beats from the mpc that were hot and the sequencer did its job.Question? Your opinion, What make the Asr x pro better than a Mpc?
The asr 10 is the dopest sampler of all time, the longer you have it, the more you say: damn this is a tight machine! I haven't seen anything yet that can touch it.
I have a Mpc2000xl w/8outs, and a eps-16+, and Im the happies guy in the world! but at times I have juggled the thought of selling both and buying a ASR-10.
Let's just put it this way you'll fall in in love w/the asr-10 because of all the little extras that it has. The effects alone make up the differance between the 2.
about the mpc sounding robotic. Maybe if you dont know how to use the swing/quantization then the mpc could sound robotic. But if you turn off the quantization all together, the mpc's sequencer has no effect on because there is NO quantization, just like when you dont quantize your stuff with the asr.
I would have to agree with the mpc's sequencer being way better then the asr's, assuming you know the capability of the sequencer of the mpc. The swing and the before/later delay you can do on your sequencing plus just the ease of using and editing your sequences make the mpc's sequencer way better, and thats only barely scratching the surface. If your sequences sound robotic, its you not the mpc. You have so much more cabilities with precisness with the mpc sequencer then you do with the asr.
as far as which its better, personal choice. When it came down to me needing money ASAP for some emergency shit, and i had to choose between selling my mpc60 or my asr10, i sold my mpc60.
The asr sequencer aint that bad, its just real basic. I cant do a lot of things i used to with my placement in kicks, like the slight offness, or a real tight swing that could with my mpc but oh well, the sampler makes up for it. Its pretty much what you put it is what you get out and real basic quantization, you can fine tune your shit like you could with the mpc. I love keys though, even on drums since im doing more simple patterns now anyways.
When i got the asr, i didnt use it for a whole month. I hated that machine. But i took some time with it, hooked it up with the MPC 200 xl and to be honest i think the ASR 10 is the best machine out there for real.
