Maybe I can help

Well, I've NEVER used my ASR-10 with any MIDI software. BUT, I know a friend who uses Fruity Loops with a MIDI controller. I'll ask him if he knows anything about your problem. He keeps trying to talk me into using a PC software sequencer like Cake Walk or Fruity Loops. I suppose I should give it a shot.

Well, like I said, I'll shoot him off an Email asking him to swing by here and see if he can help ya! With my lack of MIDI experience, that's the best I can do.

asr-10 and midi with frooty loops

September 21 2006, 10:25 AM

Hey there..

Ok.. in frootyloops aka flstudio

first go to your options menu.. then midi settings

make sure you have the proper midi ports selected for your soundcard..

example.. I'm using a soundblaster x-fi platinum..

so I choose the midi port "sb x-fi midi port [ffe0]" aka "midi hardware port"
under the OUTPUT section
I can choose to send master sync and port number for master sync usually 9 or 10

under input section
I choose "sb x-fi midi port [ffe0] same as above.
and choose "enable" to turn it on.
under controller type.. I choose "generic controller"

I choose 'auto accept controller'
and link velocity to "velocity"

now you also have some other settings the most important being "omni preview channel" which will give you live previews of the keypresses from the asr to the flstudio instrument you have selected.

I don't have an asr right now and haven't played with one in about 10 years or so.. but listed in your midi settings should be the port number for the omni channel.. set the port in flstudio omni channel to match the asr..

hit ok and close out that window saving changes..

ok now go back to the options menu..
checkmark "enable midi remote control"
and if you want output to the asr
checkmark "enable midi output"
if you want master sync enabled for the timers
checkmark that as well.

ok.. now you have midi enabled on flstudio
(assuming you have all of your soundcard drivers installed properly)

-------
if you only plan to use the asr for input.. you can change the output in flstudio to something like microsoft midi mapper or soundblaster synth a or b etc.. otherwise having the output in flstudio sent to the midi port.. will cause flstudio to actually play the asr10 for you.

--------

ok.. now.. I'm not trying to insult you..
but this is an easy mistake to make..
make sure the midi out from asr.. is going to midi in on soundcard
and midi in on asr is going to midi out on soundcard. as far as your cabling is concerned.

---------

ok.. now go into flstudio with your asr turned on..
your asr should be set to midi control enabled
choose an instrument in flstudio and open the instrument panel..
sytrus is a great one to play with if you have it.
if not.. choose a default instrument..

then tap some keys on the asr.. and you SHOULD hear the sound being played in flstudio..

thats my take on it..
again.. I don't have an asr..
so get with your manual.. and mike chipps for more info on the asr end of things..

good luck and happy sequencing.

Heath
