Hi there,
I've seen loads of threads posted asking about "chopping" but most of them don't have responses. Is there anyone out there who can explain how to chop a sample up on the ASR-10? any help appreciated!
Make a new instrument. Sample something which creates a new wavesample. Go to command Instrument and select copy wavesample to layer 1. This will create two wavesamples of the same sample on layer 1. Select wavesample 1, Then go to edit wavesample and scroll to the the key range and tap the keyboard keys of whatever range of keys you want the sample to be on. If you're just chopping out the drum kick you probably only need it on one key. If the drum kit sounds like it's the wrong note, then change the note of the key the wavesample is on. Next, go to edit wavesample and select wavesample 2. Then do the same thing. If it's a snare I want, repeat the steps above to set key range and adjust note pitch. I usually use the next key up from the drum sample. You've just chopped up a single sample (let's say drum loop) into two separate wavesamples a drum kick and a snare that can be played into a sequence.
If you really want the easy life... use some software like Recycle or Abletone live. It's super dumb easy to do. You just open up a .wav file and Ableton or Recycle automagically chopps up the sample into little slices and spreads them across the keys of your midi keyboard. Then you can play away.
The ASR does this very well too, except it's a much more manual process.
