Fitting a sample over drums and Vice Versa...

If I have a drum track laid down already...let's say a simple 4/4 beat-and I take a piano sample and try and lay it over top. the root key for the piano sample may be just a bit too slow but then the next key up is too fast. Is there a way to fine tune the piano sample to fit once it is ALREADY ON THE ASR?

And then the same question but reversed: What if I have a piano sample that I want to lay down into a 4/4 beat sequence on the ASR and then lay drums over top. How do I get the sample to "fit into" the ASR sequencer so the begining of the sample is at 1:1 and the end of the sample is 4:4? Please help.

What you want to do is called "Time Stretching"

I think it's under COMMAND + WAVE. Scroll through the wave commands and I think you'll find it. If not I'll post a link here where you can download the manual in PDF format.

Ok...I'll check it out. I was hoping there would be another way to do it since it takes so long but...

There is no other way? It just seems like there has to be another way to set the metronome constraints around the sample rather than having to put the sample into the metrnome sequence constraints.

First I edit the samples start and ending point, then truncate and save it. Then I adjust the bpm tempo up some or down some to make the sample fit right over the beat. Sometimes I even use the spring loaded wheel on the left to adjust the sample up or down some. Try the wheel some... it can fine tune the samples tempo. Hope that helps!

You can also try and shift the track. IF you shift the track to a + value, it makes the track start a little later. If you shift it to a - value, it makes it start a little sooner. You do all of that before you start time stretching and pitch bending. Also, make sure you quantize the track first.

why not just change the tempo?

Changing the tempo helps, too. But sometimes, you get those samples that just won't fit perfectly, no matter how much you time stretch, pitch bend, etc. Shifting the tracks is just another way of getting the sequence tight.

Try the pitch bend wheel... trust me it works... bend the sample a little then let it go to the normal postion... audition the outcome and if its not right, erase and try it again up or down (the wheel that is) til it fits perfectly... check my beats made on the ASR-10 and nothing else at: http://www.soundclick.com/defscottyb I might not be the greatest beatmaker in the world but I know how to make a beat fit a sample and visa-versa peep it!

Storm is right, the SHIFT option can be very helpful.

For example, the value -1 moves an off-beat hi-hat from .49 to .48
